Last night i got out with my Remington .222 fixed with a wicked lights Red LED light, and my foxpro. I setup trying to call coyotes but on the way out i remembered a den in this rock outcropping (pretty big den) and set the call about 40 yards from it and played "Lucky bird" . to my left there was an old railroad that is not used anymore, but i could not see down it. about a minute in I heard something running in down the railroad. I waited for them to come out and finally I heard one run beind me and circle up back to it's den. I guess it saw me sitting there or saw my truck which was parked on the railroad about 10 yards behind me. There was another one down in the brush rustling around but neer did get to see what they were. I figured it was probably coon but maybe a pair of foxes. Next stand I sat in a field where i had missed a coyote a couple nights before. Played "snowshoe hare" for two sessions, scanning the field the whole time. after waiting about 5 minutes I played "Juvenile Red fox distress" and shut it off.10 seconds after i shut it off i heard a sound coming from the woods that sounded just like my fox call i had just played. then It would make the sound again. I figured a fox would step out at any moment. I turned my foxpro decoy on and waited for him. after awhile i decided to hit it again and just let it play through a few times. I was setup in the corner of a field on a fencerow with cut corn behind me and thick logged out woods on either side of the field. Finally I heard something coming to my right. It would come closer and then stop. come some more and stop. About the time I waited and waited for it to come out in front of me,. I decided to make sure nothing was coming from the other side, and when i shined back toward my call there was a big old coon running straight to it. Not minding my light shining on it at all, on full brightness. I popped him at 30 yards. Then shinedthe whole field and back to my right and never saw anything else. I have no idea what it was I heard. maybe fox, coyote, or just another coon? Maybe the coon was making the noise I heard in the woods. Kinda sucks to not know whats coming in. but man it was exciting hearing it come in close. Only called in three coyotes so far this year.

Been out a few times coyote hunting. me and a buddy set out one morning overlooking a nice sized pasture and as soon as we were able to see through the scope started calling on the fox pro with some rabbit distress. 30 seconds in i catch movement. I was video taping, so i told him to get ready here comes one over the hill. Lo and behold, it's a big old doe coming froma bout 200 yards away. She runs directly to the call then kinda spooks and gets confused and stands to our left at 10 yards. later, at the same stand, we have probly about 100 crows circling us overhead and making so much racket you can;t even hear the foxpro anymore.Next, a redtail hawk swoops in. NExt set is 150 yards form this one. Called in a cow, came from completely across the field straight to the call. And tonight, I started out with some bird distress, then after 4 calling sequences of bird distress I hit em with some red fox distress. This is when I am on high alert to see the coyote. I hear leaves thrashing and crunching to my left getting closer. Here comes a coyote. I press my shotgun tight to my shoulder with finger on the safety. It gets closer and i see that its a coon. He ran to my call and jumped on top of it. I shut it off so he wouldnt tear it apart. He just sat there on top of it thinking, What the heck kind of trick is this? He scurried back to the woods and climbed a tree. I put on some coon fight and he ran right back. Didnt shoot cause i was using my expensive buckshot. haha Definitely gonna try some more coon calling soon, with a 22lr in hand! Maybe set up some kind of decoy he can attack instead of the call. maybe put out a little black stuffed animal near the call. OH, then with the coon fight still blaring after the coon left, i had a small buck walk right in about 10 yards away like he was deaf.lol

Hmm, i guess there are positives and negatives to each side. Mechanicals may shoot like field tips, but may end up getting less penetration due to the force being used to deploy the blades. A twig my hit them and they may open prematurely, they may not open at all. But fixed blades are more affected in the wind, and sometimes difficult to get to shoot like your field tips. They say mechanicals are not good for quartering to or away shots, however one of Shwhackers selling points is that it can be shot at a quartering away deer.

That sucks, I use Muzzy 3 blade's and they work pretty good. I think I will try Swhacker broadheads next year. Never used mechanicals before. I know that some brands have performed poorly. Some that come to mind are Rage 3 blades, NAP blood runners have been known to fail and i wouldnt try them. Rage two blades might be good, but goodness they are expensive.

Nice Buck! I thought opening morning was the best in a long time! Way better than last year! Never seen so many big deer hitting the ground! Maybe Strippitman is hunting in the spot where they always go to hide, if so, hang tight, they will be back shortly. lol

i did not like the coot i tried. but maybe its all in how you cook it.I killed another coot, and shot at some ducks but no cigar. Paddled my burlap camoflauged kayak right up on a lone duck about 45 yards away when a small flock flew by me at about 45 yards and i shot 3 shots at them and didnt connect. I should have just shot the one sitting there lol. Then when i first got out there i saw a small group of ducks sitting on the water then take off and fly figure 8 circles around the slough and i thought for sure they would fly right over me but they did not.

Put dad in the two man stand over my bean plot this morning and he put down a big boy. His second deer. 50 yard shot. I would have it on film but the camera died due to the cold I guess. Oh well. Big 10 , symmetrical Idk what it scores but i'm guessing 135- 145 hit in shoulder, ran through the beans and started carrying his front leg then ran his nose into the ground and went down quick. We were pumped! Killed at 7:30 i believe. Told dad to get it mounted but he said he didnt want to, so looks like im doing another skull mount. Attachments:

I am going to be sitting in the two man stand over my bean/ corn/winterwheat/sorghum plot. Plenty of bean pods and corn left. Even sorgum heads. Should be a good hunt. Dad is taking the 44 mag lever action (scoped) and going for a trophy buck, and I am taking a 44 mag revolver going for a slickhead if it gets close enough. Wasnt gonna do any gun hunting this year but i thought it would be cool to use the revolver. Getting pics of at least 4 does in the beans every evening, some nice bucks in daylight and a lot of nice buck at night. I got a good feeling about it.

I bought a box of Hornady's #4 buckshot, supposed to have a wad in it that helps it hold together longer. It was pretty expensive though. $17 for 10. I shot one to see how it does, so now I can kill 9 coyotes. haha I the target up at 45 yards and it didn't do too bad. One thing I noticed, was that I could see the wad go straight to the target with the shot. It appeared it me that the wad went right through the target, but it must have went over it or something. I think these loads will be deadly on coyotes up to 50 yards, maybe 60. There were about 10 pellets that I would say would have hit the "kill zone" of a coyote if the target were the coyotes chest, at 45 yards. plus whatever pellets may have hit him in the neck or head. Alright, here's a question for you all. I just bought a new choke tube for my shotgun. It's a Carlson's Black Cloud Mid-range extended choke tube.(Full choke) It says it can shoot all steel loads, lead, copper, tungsten loads. My question is, can I shoot 0 buck through it? I thought you are only supposed to shoot slugs through an improved cylinder choke, but idk about buckshot. I'd say I could but I wanted to see what you guys say. I was going to try some close range coyote hunting in the timber for coyotes and wanted to put this new choke to work on them so I can extend my effective range. Here's another question, What shot size do you like to use for coyotes? Suggestions? I know turkey loads will work but what about something with more range, say 40- 50 yards with minimal damage to the fur, although i'd more concerned about dead coyote than good fur.

Alright, here's the turkey video. first vid clip is from the day before when I called this hen down off the other hill and she came walkin around the creek bottom yelping as loud as she could, it was echoing through the woods. turn up the volume and it may take a little bit to hear her. When i trim the video it doesnt always trim the audio the same way so the audio didnt match up to the vid when I trimmed it. I really need some editing software!
