Went out this evening with a good friend from work for a little therapy. We couldn't decide if we we're going to go out for Feather or Fur. After a long ride home, I gathered my gear for both and headed to his place just off 46 in clay county. We ended up going out for some duck. Set on a pond at the edge of a corn field, and sat in the cat-tails over 2 pair of mallard decoys. We seen A LOT of birds come in, but were only able to manage 2 before sunset. Couple of nice wood-ducks. got them home, popped out the breasts and legs, and bagged up the belly down for his wife (she's making pillows ). This was really my first "DUCK" hunt, and I have to say, I LIKED IT! Now the real problem, I have to go out and buy new gear and justify it to MAMA (Boy, I better make D@MN sure I cook that duck the way she likes it, or its gonna be rough sneakin new toys in)... Just wanted to drop by and share the evening with you guys.

Nice birds. I shot my first duck yesterday morning at my grandma's... He went to the taxidermist, so I'll have to get out again to get some for the table.

That's awesome man. I'm holding off on the taxidermist till I get a pair of mallards. DEFFINATELY going back out though. Will be spending the rest of the weekend scouring www.hoosiertopics.com and the rest of the inter-webs for ducking gear. I think I may have the bug. Need to figure out how I'm gonna cook these two though. Maybe some of this Duck Sausage I keep hearing everyone talk about...

Nice! Me and a couple friends had "duck camp" this weekend and had a blast. We didnt get a lick of sleep, but we were cracking up the whole time and havin fun. It was my first time duck hunting. We set up in a place that was supposed to be a wood duck honey hole, but we didnt see any wood ducks. At shooting light we had two mallards soar in and we shot both, seen others but wouldnt come in. We also checked out this little pond and jumped about 30+ wood ducks off it. with no shotguns to shoot them. I left today but my friend called me and said they went to the same pond this evening and jump shot 6 woodies.

I shot a coot tonight from my kayak. haha I shot it off the water, as unsportsmanlike as that is. haha And when I went to look at it, I had no idea what it was since this is my first year duck hunting.I'm glad the conservation officer didnt show up, i may have crapped my pants lol

That's a beautiful wood duck goosopondmonster! We had a bunch of coots come in last weekend and me and my buddy knocked 11 down YES both guns were plugged and we actually both just shot twice.. it was a big, tight group! and several small groups landed before the the big group so it was hard to miss.. believe we shot a teal, 3 mallards and I bagged my second ever redhead! We took the coots back to my buddies deer camp and he just threw em in a pan with some veggie oil and country bobs and they ate just fine! Little gamey and chewier, but I definitely wouldn't pass on one again. I'd love to post pics if I knew how to get them off of my phone..

i did not like the coot i tried. but maybe its all in how you cook it.I killed another coot, and shot at some ducks but no cigar. Paddled my burlap camoflauged kayak right up on a lone duck about 45 yards away when a small flock flew by me at about 45 yards and i shot 3 shots at them and didnt connect. I should have just shot the one sitting there lol. Then when i first got out there i saw a small group of ducks sitting on the water then take off and fly figure 8 circles around the slough and i thought for sure they would fly right over me but they did not.

The curse continues.....since I've got a pretty good stockpile of meat in the freezer already, I decided to give this waterfowl thing another try. Drove down to Linton and picked up my duck stamp and then did some scouting at Greene-Sullivan Forest and Hillenbrand FWA. Found some ducks at Hillenbrand and was headed towards home when I thought I had a flat tire. Got out and checked, but they all looked good, so I figured it was just the mud from the crap roads. Took off again and at the next stop sign I was done; broke tie rod. Chase was hunting out at our place and I hated to bother him, but I figured he owed me a couple roadside rescues. While waiting for Chase I tried to re-connect the tie rod with some straps I had in the truck, but no luck. Luckily; Chase has some redneck blood in him and showed up with some bailing wire. Wired it back in place and eased it into town to the mechanic. Thought about just getting it home, but that would have been more turns and I would have had to cancel my weekend pheasant hunts to work on the dang thang!! All I can say is that I must have pissed off the waterfowl hunting Gods at some point in my life.

Yep, back on the road again. Speaking of duck stamps, they announced this week that the 2015 stamp is going from $15 to $25, the first increase since 1991. That's probably my fault.....#waterfowlcurse

Ive been out a few times this year and havent had anything great yet. I actually just got home from scouting goose pond green sullivan and hillenbrand and between them all i believe we saw 50 geese and maybe 100 ducks so it could be awhile before any good hunts come about. Troy you may just want to start hunting with someone else before you curse us all even worse! If we're ever headed to hunt birds up around there and have room ill let you and chase know if ya want to give it a go again haha.

What would be the point of scouting on the last day of season, to see what you're gonna be missing? I've been hearing ducks behind the house in the evenings, so I snuck back there yesterday and saw 1 lone hen and just left her alone. If we have halfway decent weather during the late season I'll get the yak out.
