Last night i got out with my Remington .222 fixed with a wicked lights Red LED light, and my foxpro. I setup trying to call coyotes but on the way out i remembered a den in this rock outcropping (pretty big den) and set the call about 40 yards from it and played "Lucky bird" . to my left there was an old railroad that is not used anymore, but i could not see down it. about a minute in I heard something running in down the railroad. I waited for them to come out and finally I heard one run beind me and circle up back to it's den. I guess it saw me sitting there or saw my truck which was parked on the railroad about 10 yards behind me. There was another one down in the brush rustling around but neer did get to see what they were. I figured it was probably coon but maybe a pair of foxes.
Next stand I sat in a field where i had missed a coyote a couple nights before. Played "snowshoe hare" for two sessions, scanning the field the whole time. after waiting about 5 minutes I played "Juvenile Red fox distress" and shut it off.10 seconds after i shut it off i heard a sound coming from the woods that sounded just like my fox call i had just played. then It would make the sound again. I figured a fox would step out at any moment. I turned my foxpro decoy on and waited for him. after awhile i decided to hit it again and just let it play through a few times. I was setup in the corner of a field on a fencerow with cut corn behind me and thick logged out woods on either side of the field. Finally I heard something coming to my right. It would come closer and then stop. come some more and stop. About the time I waited and waited for it to come out in front of me,. I decided to make sure nothing was coming from the other side, and when i shined back toward my call there was a big old coon running straight to it. Not minding my light shining on it at all, on full brightness. I popped him at 30 yards. Then shinedthe whole field and back to my right and never saw anything else. I have no idea what it was I heard. maybe fox, coyote, or just another coon? Maybe the coon was making the noise I heard in the woods. Kinda sucks to not know whats coming in. but man it was exciting hearing it come in close.
Only called in three coyotes so far this year.
