Well the combine finally made it's grand appearance this afternoon! Got in a tree shortly after 3pm and only seen 1 deer; a small 3 point. He went busting by the first time through the woods basically running from 1 field to another. Then the combine switched fields and the 3 came back. I let him go. I'll probably regret it because I really enjoy the jerky I make. The 3 pointer is no longer with us. I gut shot him from 119 yards and after tracking I found him still alive and had to put another shot in. Too low on freezer meat to be trophy hunting anyway. First deer since 2010 and first buck since '08.

I WHIFFED. Had a decent little 8 come running in when I was walking the ditch to my stand. Stopped him once then realized I didn't have a shell chambered! So I missed my chance at a 20 yard chip shot. Anyway he kept running parallel to me, after I had one chambered he was about 40 yards. Got him to slow to a walk, but there was some brush between me and him. I think I concentrated to much on hitting the hole in the brush rather than a spot on the deer. Blew hair off the bottom of his chest, but he walked away unharmed. Saw him later that night and he was fine.

Here's where I'll be spending my evening. I put the ground blind up yesterday afternoon in the rain and now it's "snowed in" pretty good. Too bad I'll have to put hunter orange on it starting tomorrow. I kicked the snow off some of the turnips, so hopefully something will show up.

Well i went huntin over my wheat/corn plot on friday evening and this morning. HAd pic of a big ol 9 pt 25 yards from my stand in the plot at 5 30 pm thrusday night while the rain/ice was comin down. I actually think i may still have a chance at getting a decent buck now! stayed up too late thursday night since school was canceled friday and ended up waking up at like 10 30 lol. So i went out that evening and had pics of turkeys in the plot at 11 30 and right before the turkeys had a little basket rack 8 headed for his bedroom at 11 25. Today is late archery opener for turkey. but none showed up today! its kind of hit or miss with those turkeys i keep getting pics of them every now and then in the plot. Oh and saw 6 deer total this morning. saw 2 walking out and they just stood there watching me walk through the field at about 70 yards form them. I think they just didnt feel like trying to run away thru the deep snow unless they had to ! Did some scouting and found a tone of tracks around a locust tree , they were digging up the seed pods dropped by the locust tree. Thy had not been doing much in the wheat and the corn there is hardly nothing left. There was some traffic thru the little clover plot last night and i could see where the deer would dig a small patch of snow out to get to the clover underneath.. I helped them out a lil by scratching out an area for them to get at the clover easily. Oh and the deer i seen walkin out were diggin around underneath a couple persimmon trees. And saw some more digging around under a few late dropping oak trees.

I ended up going down along the field in the stand where I've been whiffing. FROZE. Heard a shot back on the lease about sunset then a little later I saw the scrub buck go by at around a 100 yds. Bout done with this late archery crap.

Do you have much luck with the deer in the turnips?
Some folks say they are the best thing for this time of year, while others say radishes are a better option.

Do you have much luck with the deer in the turnips? The deer were hitting them pretty hard last January. That was the first time I had seen where they were digging them up and actually eating the turnip.

That was the first time I had seen where they were digging them up and actually eating the turnip. That's the same thing I experienced last year and it looks like it will be the same way this year. Next year I am putting out soybeans and peas for an early and late season plot. I probably won't ever do the turnips again.

I probably won't ever do the turnips again. [/quote] I planted Pennington seed companies "Deer greens" I think it was called (radish+turnips) I noticed that the they need good sunlight AND good moisture to do very good . One location had moist ground 24/7 with less sunlight, which helped them start up growing faster but never made very big bulbs and the deer would eat em down because they didnt have enough sunlight to grow fast enough. they either spot it took them forever to get started off but we started getting some heavy rains and one day i went back there and it was insane how big the turnip plants were and had some nice bulbs! didnt put a whole lot of fertilizer on em either. No lime added either. I havent seen them digging up the bulbs yet but They definitely liked to eat the leafs of the plants..They didnt even wait til it frosted they were on em as soon as they got big enough for them to eat em haha As for the soybean thing I planted one 45 lb bag of beans and they did fantastic. they were easy to grow just used some glyphosate and hand sprayer to control the weeds a little. The deer had every leaf ate off the soybean plot by the end of september. And they even started picking off the bean pods and had them all ate before bow season as well.. maybe they ate the beans because there was a lack of leaves to eat? Idk but i recommend you plant a whole bunch of beans if you want a plot to hunt over lol They seem to be hitting my wheat plot every night since around mid october. they will be in there feeding in the evenings and late at night 6 or 7 in the plot at one time My small corn plot lasted til about the beginning of november suprisingly , they really loved that. And my clover plot started getting hammered around mid october for a couple of weeks and then thye just didnt touch it and now with the deep snow they have been diggin at it to get the clover..
