That's the same thing I experienced last year and it looks like it will be the same way this year. Next year I am putting out soybeans and peas for an early and late season plot. I probably won't ever do the turnips again.
I planted Pennington seed companies "Deer greens" I think it was called (radish+turnips) I noticed that the they need good sunlight AND good moisture to do very good . One location had moist ground 24/7 with less sunlight, which helped them start up growing faster but never made very big bulbs and the deer would eat em down because they didnt have enough sunlight to grow fast enough. they either spot it took them forever to get started off but we started getting some heavy rains and one day i went back there and it was insane how big the turnip plants were and had some nice bulbs! didnt put a whole lot of fertilizer on em either. No lime added either. I havent seen them digging up the bulbs yet but They definitely liked to eat the leafs of the plants..They didnt even wait til it frosted they were on em as soon as they got big enough for them to eat em haha As for the soybean thing I planted one 45 lb bag of beans and they did fantastic. they were easy to grow just used some glyphosate and hand sprayer to control the weeds a little. The deer had every leaf ate off the soybean plot by the end of september. And they even started picking off the bean pods and had them all ate before bow season as well.. maybe they ate the beans because there was a lack of leaves to eat? Idk but i recommend you plant a whole bunch of beans if you want a plot to hunt over lol They seem to be hitting my wheat plot every night since around mid october. they will be in there feeding in the evenings and late at night 6 or 7 in the plot at one time My small corn plot lasted til about the beginning of november suprisingly , they really loved that. And my clover plot started getting hammered around mid october for a couple of weeks and then thye just didnt touch it and now with the deep snow they have been diggin at it to get the clover..
My turnips and radishes did great. Actually, they are huge! But, I have not seen any sign of the deer eating the bulbs yet. They are probably eating the leaves although I don't see any signs of it. Last year they didn't touch the turnip plot until we had about 6" of snow on the ground. Once that happened they hammered it! Next year my plot will be designed totally for early season hunting. I will put out soybeans but they won't get planted until mid-July. That is what I did last year and I had green beans right up until the first of November before they died off. I already bought a bag of Antler King Red Zone because TSC were selling their last few bags at 50% off a couple of weeks ago. I know a couple of guys who swear by Red Zone because it is a plot that will produce all season long because of the various crops that are in it.

ah , I did not plant my turnips til early-mid september. Next time i will plant earlier. It seems our deer must have different tastes. Possibly you have something growing on its own in the woods that the deer prefer over the turnips? I will try planting my beans later next year as well. Probly gonna put a couple more clover plots in and more wheat this fall. I have a stand setup which will be perfect next year got a 1/2 acre field gonna have sunflowers planted there this sumnmer and then come fall gonna mow it all down and have some fun dove hunting and then plant the whole thing in turnips+ wheat(or maybe winter rye) and then on the edge of the field im going to have several rows of corn planted there so i can get to my stand without the deer seeing me.. they should funnel right out past me my stand is on an intersection with a deer trail and a old logging road.. Ahh i love planning out food plot ideas while deer hunting! haha this year im just going to plant my corn by broadcasting and discing in.. I was supposed to buy a couple bushels of beans off a farmer but he said that his farmhand saw the beans and didnt know and poured them in his truck and drove off lol do you knmow anyway i could still get beans without paying $45 a bag? was gonna plant about 150lb of beans this year but i dont know if thats in the budget now lol

Yep. I'm selling my bow. If I archery hunt next year it will be with a crossbow. dont be to quick on that decision now last year i had 6 misses. 3 with a bow and 3 with a gun. The farthest was about 40 yards too. yet this year ive connected on every shot, although the one was non fatal, i still hit the dagone thing!

Yep. I'm selling my bow. If I archery hunt next year it will be with a crossbow. Let me recommend a crossbow to you if you go down that route. Parker Hornet Extreme it's on the expensive side but well worth it. Buy a rope-cocker w/ it it helps with accuracy and deceases draw weight by 40-50%. It's really nice so if you go crossbow just make sure you don't cock w/ your hands it hurts the limbs of the bow.

Troy, I missed my first 5 deer I ever shot at with a bow. The only reason I hit my first two was because they were within 7 yards. Now this year I've shot a doe at 30+ and 40+. I just cant ever seem to hit the dang things with a gun!

I have killed 2 deer with a crossbow and have never shot at one with a compound. This evening I went out and said "brown n' down tonight I start baseball tomorrow probably my last chance to get out for a long while." I brought my compound out and next thing ya know 20 min into it a deer comes it was small not too big and I said "Hey, it's my last shot let's end on a good note." I draw and smoke what I thought was a doe. I hear it crash walk up to it turn it over to check it out and button buck. I am not mad about the size and the shot placement it was just that it was a button buck. I got it all on video to so video will be posted soon. In the end I put some more meat in the freezer!

Great job Evan! :)I can understand why you thought that was a doe. You could sort of tell by the head shape that it was a bb, but the big ears, long neck, and fat body sure looked like a doe. Nice shot too!
