[quote author=strippitman Has anybody started to put out their food plots yet? If so, what did you plant? I have begun working on my first plot ever and I will start another thread tracking my progress very soon.
It looks like I'm going to put out a small patch of either Antler King Red Zone or Honey Hole or maybe even a mixture of both. More to come....[/quote]
In the spring i was going to plant corn but the tractor was broken.. it wouldnt have grown anyway lol. This fall i am going to plant one or two small plots with oats, chicory, and turnips.. I have planted several food plots and alot didnt work out very well. Sometimes they dont get enough sunlight, rain, or the weeds take them over. The most successful food plot i made was a very small plot of oats in the woods in a semi-open area. I planted it in october (temps were in the 60s and 70s still) and it kept growing until around mid november. it was probably 8-10" tall and it was very green. No weeds! Then the next spring it continued to grow to about 3 ft tall and the deer ate it up and also slept in it i think, lol I dont like planting in fieldsin the spring or summer. The fall is the best time to plant imo because the weeds wont take it over as fast as they will in the summer. If you want a really nice food plot you might want to do a soil test and put down some annual grass herbicide.

Mono-dicalcium phosphate and trace mineral salt. Just put them in layers on the ground. And make sure that the top layer is the mineral salt.

hey topwaterbass, how did you catch that asian carp? I caught 3 silver carp in white river at the williams dam today. I was snagging them with a very small treble hook with only 8 pound line..it was all i had. ANd i caught a couple the day before by snagging them with my fly rod, that was an awesome fight! I was fishing with some other guy who was snagging with me, and we would help each other get the fish in the net, but then he left and so i lost about 6 of them right near the bank..IT was really hard to get them in the net without them seeing it first.. I snagged one MONSTER of a fish and my drag was screaming! It went across the river, and then 100+ yards downstream and got tangled up in a snag . It had to be over 30 pounds.

I have seen people dumping barrels of some kind of liquid/chemicals into creeks near my house.. I assume they were dumping chemicals from making meth or something. What a shame for someone to be so careless about the environment. I would have called the DNR but didnt have phone service and couldnt see their license plate #. Dont want to harass any strange person without a gun. This spring i also busted someone growing marijuana. They had just planted over 200 plants.

Maybe the deer will be on their feet more this year, since the crops arent doing good. Usually the deer will stay in the corn most of the day.But this year it is not as tall and there is not as much food for them as far as corn or soybeans. There are tons of acorns though. And hickory nuts. This will be a good year for squirrel huntin.

I took my kayak downstream from the williams dam to the covered bridge and i got out into the water and walked about halfway across the river and the water only came up to my knees!! I was seeing gar everywhere and i caught a few small ones with a small jighead and a white grub. Then i hooked a 40" gar and my drag started singin and he towed me around in my kayak for about 10 minutes, I didnt want to put him in the boat with me so i paddled to shore and killed it.. That was the most intense fish fight that i have ever had.LOL And my biggest fish

I know what your talkin about with the hills..there are some places in the Hoosier national that are straight up and down.. but i havent deer hunted in there before, i squirrel hunt in there and sometimes look for sheds and mushrooms. And imagine dragging a 250 lb buck up and down those hills! I thought about huntin in there one time and i think if i killed one i would probably just hang it from a tree skin it ,quarter it, then take off the loins, the front shoulders and the head(if it was a buck) in a bag or somethin. But i havent found a good spot to hunt on public land yet.I never seem to see any deer in there.

Yeah this drought is hard on them. And greenedog is right. I will probably be huntin close to a creek or pond and close to a bedding area. I'm sure a deer wouldnt want to travel very far from its bed when it is hot and dry......atleast not til it gets dark. I hate nocturnal deer. It is so frustrating trying to hunt them. I saw one decent buck in daylight in one of the places that i have permission to hunt, he was a small 8. And on the backside of another small property i hunt, there was a BIG tall 10 or 12 standing in someones front yard eating apples.I hope i get to see him again. I need to set my trail camera up soon

I have been diggin around in the pond too.. it is a really shallow pond and it is taken over by some kind of little lily pads, but most of the pond is dried up now(which hopefully killed most of the lilypads). So i decided to dig out a deeper part around the edge. Ive just been using the old shovel and standing on a board to keep from sinking deep in the muck.I am gonna try to get the tractor down there and use a grater blade type thing to scrape off the muck in other parts of the pond and get down to the clay bottom. I need to knock down all the cattails growin around the pond too.I really need to look into some herbicide for the pond.. The lily pads in there are THICK, and they arent normal lily pads. The ducks show up to the pond in the fall and they bring all kinds of hydrilla etc. to the pond.

One time i was catfishin in a creek with alot logs/stumps/debris. And i got hung up a few times and broke my line off. Then about an hour later i caught about a 5 lb channel and to release it in lake crisco, and while i when i was done cleanin him, i always look in their stomachs to see what they are eating, and i found one of my hooks in his stomach. I thought that was a pretty good deal..lol

I dont know about makin one, but i would reccommend buying a cage trap..thats what i used to use to train my dog with.. I usually caught coons, but i would also catch possums and rabbits. Of course ive never tried to catch a squirrel in it..im sure it could be done. I dont remember how much they cost

[quote author plants in the pond will produce oxygen as long as the sun is out, but at night the plant life actually absorbs oxygen and this is when the fish will struggle. In a section of the creek where i was fishin this morning, there were schools of drum/perch swimming around and there is a small spring fed creek trickling into the main creek, and the fish were sitting below it , also some of the perch were actually jumping out of the water onto land or into really shallow water.. I think there wasnt much oxygen in the water, and they were also staying cool in the cold spring water. But heres were it gets strange, I was messing around trying to hook one of the big perch, and i ended up snagging one that was with a smaler female perch (spawning maybe) and I got him in and tried to let him go, but he just went belly up and I was trying to revive him, but i couldnt so i had to bring him home with me.. then i loook behind me and the femal perch with him was swimming around and next thing i know it turned upside down and sank to the bottom!! Then i felt bad about even messing with them in the first place, and so i ended up taking both of them home to clean.. I think i will be leaving the other perch alone for now on. It was really strange.the big perch was 24" long and weighed 5 lbs.. it was the biggest perch ive ever caught most likely

Thats what i was thinkin man..but i need to be making money instead of spending it right now because there are alot of things i need to buy before deer season. And usually i cut lawns or take scrap metal off, but ive only got one more load of scrap to take and the grass aint growin cuz it aint rainin!
