a sad day for us old school rockers. Jani Lane, lead singer of Warrant, was found dead. Man these guys really put on a good show back in the day. This is one of the bands myself and my buds road tripped all over the midwest to see in our teens.

Unfortunately i havent been getting in much fishing this summer. So, the youngest son, wife and myself headed out to the range for a family day of shooting. The goals were to get the boy some more time with .22s, the wife some time with her 9mm and other guns, and my main focus was to instruct and work with the muzzle loader as i am dialing in a different scope i mounted on it. Heres some pics and a short video. I would say i am close to where i want to be with this scope...I would say the kid is getting comfortable w/his Great grand pas/grandpas/dads old Win. 61... A cool shot of the .357 in action...The boy had asked a couple days ago if he could try his hand with the 1911. I said sure. His mother was freaking out at the range saying, "No, No, No, its too much for him." Kinda freaked the kid out and almost psyched him out from taking his turn. Well, considering DAD has been the one working with the lad for a couple years now on the shooting safety/marksmanship thing, he overruled the "clucking hen". I was confident the kid could do it. I was just wondering how well. Well to say the kid impressed is an understatement...and this old @$$ doesnt impress easily where shooting sports/marksmanship are concerned. Heres the video of his first time up w/ the 1911... Ignore!: The form, we started working on proper pistol form in the subsequent volleys. NOTICE: the circled holes, these are the .45s...pretty dern good for the first time up with a new weapon!!

BAH! Dont apologize to me. You asked for opinions and i simply gave you my open, honest opinion. You bought what YOU wanted with YOUR money. I truly hope it serves you better than the Taurus i had. You, your wife and kids should get many hours of fun out of the lil rig. Hard to beat plinking with a .22. AND it will really help prepare y'all for when you do decide to step up to a larger caliber. Too often i have seen new pistol shooters (myself being one, many moons ago) step into a larger caliber handgun only to be disappointed with the accuracy...not due to the guns inaccuracy but the shooters lack of skill/knowledge handling a handgun. I sincerely hope you dont take any offense to my comments of "ignorance" as none was meant. I dont know you or your level of knowledge...so i simply assume one has none and go from there. (we all know what happens when one ass-u-me s ) Happy shooting! P.S. i EXPECT a detailed range report, preferably with pics and video, and SOON!

Anthony, you give a thumbs down for 9mm but talk up a .38!?!? They are similar in diameter and the 9mm generaly fly 1 -200 FPS faster therefore brings more terminal energy to the target. All things considered, when comparing the two rounds, they are very similar. "Stopping power" is a myth...or unquantifiable! Correct me if I'm wrong, slash my tires and besmirch my name, but a properly loaded .38 Special should be SUPERIOR to any Nine. IN Speer number 11, I see a 38 160 gr soft point bullet at 1028 fps. I see a 124 gr 9 mill at 1224 fps. And that is the fastest NIne heavy weight I saw in 5 or 6 reloading manuals. Now, I'm not even going to do the math here- even when their energy is about the same the 38 makes it with a far heavier slug. And the Hornady shows a Nine with a 147 gr bullet at only 1000fps, well behind the plus P 38. Now, I could flip around and find pet loads for each cartridge, but I think in general the 38 Plus P edges out the Nine. The nine offers larger mag capacity. I think the 38 a more significant hit. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. As for stopping power being a "MYTH," you are WRONG. A weapon and bullets stopping power play a key role in the deciding factor for nearly 100% of all weapon buyers. If stopping power was just made up, then we would all still be running around with sling shots and blow guns. If it was a "MYTH" our soldiers and officers would be getting issued pea shooters instead of the proper tools for the job. It is hypothetically possible for the impact of a bullet to cause a pressure pulse of such magnitude through the body of the target, that it is instantly killed (notice I deliberately avoided the word "shock"). This happens, for example, when you shoot a chipmunk with a .30-`06, even if the chipmunk wears body armor. I'm confused...Is that still UNQUANTIFIABLE??? first and formost, i dont slash tires or besmirch names...any that know me or have followed my posts on other boards know that i can and do argue a subject in a gentlemanly way. I'm not going to debate a subject any different on an internet board than i will in person. NOW, i dunno about YOUR load data, but mine (Lyman 48th) puts your .38 cal, 160 gr bullet @ max load ( i actually have 2 -160 gr data blocks) 1 @ 863 FPS and the other @ 727fps. I then look and see a 9mm 147 gr TMJ max loaded @1012fps and a different type of 147gr being pushed to 1061 fps. Of course all load data is open to interpretation as many factors go into account such as barrel length, rate of twist, and many many other factors. All this being typed, we can toss around load data all day but its not really pertinent, as when i see a person asking for advice, i assume they are in general ignorant to the type of firearm in question. (no offense intended Monty, I have taught kids, women and full grown men that had little to no experience handling firearms) Assuming a person is in general ignorant of firearms, its then safe to assume they arent going to be hand loading...so our load data becomes a moot point. In general, most factory loads are going to be between 115 and 130 gr for both .38 and 9mm. So my original point once again becomes valid...they are basically a very similar round. Its counter intuitive to besmirch the 9mm and brag the .38. They were both released around the same time period and have been doing their job for over 100 years. Both are a popular round. If either was that bad, it would have faded into obscurity long ago. I own both (even tho i dont shoot .38, i use .357 mag, BIG difference) i think both have their place and are both fine rounds for their intended purpose. Now to "knock down power"... EVERY person and EVERY situation is different, therefore it becomes an unquantifiable myth. Now, i am not going to argue that bigger isnt better, that big holes arent better. (tis WHY i generally carry a .45 cal 1911) But if big bullets were the only factor in self/home defense we would be guiding him to a 12 guage slug. But a 12 guage is IMHO impractical for a couple of reasons; 1) swinging a 26" barrel in tight quarters is not practical and 2) if you've ever touched off a 12 guage in an enclosed, say, 14' x 14' room....you aint gonna be in any big hurry to do it again...the concussion is BRUTAL! A well placed .22 lr will cause more damage and kill quicker then 14 poorly placed 45 acp. The man asked for advice about what handgun to choose for home/personal defense....the BEST advice is to shoot anything and everything and purchase what HE is most comfortable with. Be that .38 or 9mm, or .40, .45acp, or .50 Monty, i see your from Riley, IN...thats a long haul for myself being here in the fort...if we were closer, i would snatch you up and take you to the range and let you fire any and all my handguns and different loads...but alas this is a moot point

My advice is... Avoid Taurus and Gander Mtn like the plague!!!!!!Buy American!!! We have some damn fine firearms manufactures in this country that are in financial trouble. (as are most companies) They NEED our help, show some love for your country and support it with your $$!! Springfield armory makes VERY fine weapons! Avoid the XD's as they are made n Croatia. Smith and Wesson makes some very fine shooting irons as well! As does Ruger. To this point i am pleasantly suprised with my newest "toy" a Kel-Tec PF9. A newer american firearms manufacturer. PF-9Me first time out on the range with the PF-9Wife first time up with new PF-9You cannot go wrong with a SA 1911. You simply cannot argue with the 1911's 100 years of proven experience on the battlefield. SA 1911 -slow fire drill- 2 magazines - results1911 Rapid fire drill...Also hard to beat a wheel gun .38/.357 or .44 spec./mag. Plus you can hunt with these, so it makes for a dual purpose firearm. If i had it to do over again i would have gotten the .44 instead of the .357. Kids/wifey can easily handle .38/44spec and the .357/44 mag brings a serious thump downrange. But remember when switching from a Spec. to a mag. round the POI is completely different so its difficult to switch back and forth from kids/wife back to yourself. .357Guns are like bows or anything else. Test drive as many as you can and buy what feels best for you. Remember, opinions are like @$$holes, everyone has one and they all stink! The problem i have found is there simply isnt one be all, end all, do it all gun out there. You need to buy one for a specific job and then get another to do another job.

I have a kayak and I don't think I would take any gun with me while in it. I usually carry a knife but that isn't a good defense against a gun. Guess I will be buying a riot shield and street sweeper. Or maybe take my tec-9. I am a gun supporter and love guns but I really think its ridiculous that you can't always just go enjoy yourself such as the guy kayaking without the risk of something like this. As for the guy that shot the kayaker...I believe in an eye for an eye, maybe that's why I couldn't be in office.... My 686 is stainless, therefore resists rusting in a wet environment, then you take your rounds and put a thin coating of clear fingernail polish around where the bullet meets the case and where the primer is set into the case. this water proofs your ammo. Just be sure to practice with these rounds as the sealer creates a little more chamber pressure which causes a different POI. Always remember, the assaultER always chooses the time, the place, and the way of the assault. The ONLY thing YOU can choose is the way and means of your defense. Also Its better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it!

When i run for office this will be my song! (cut off "i remember now" the cartoon at the beginning and "anarchy X" the intro instrumental and leave only "Revolution Calling") Hard to believe this album was released in 1988. The content holds more truth today than it did even then.

AHHHH the good ole days... This first video is from WAY back in the day when videos where NOT very main stream. This tune was released in 1981 on an E.P. that i had on cassettes (ask you parents what cassettes are kiddies ) I am sure Greenedog can appreciate this first one. This is prolly the most underrated (and best) of all the "hair bands". Cheesy by todays standards i know...but when this was done the Comadore 64 was the most powerful home computer...for those few that actually had a home computer, the internet was a pipe dream and MTV and cable tv was in its infancy. Now for a live preformance of the same tune
