I had to head to K county yesterday to pick up some of my camping gear. I went up to the Pere Marquette for our annual salmon trip but had to abort as i took ill with a severe case of acute bronchitis. (Dr said i was lucky i came home when i did...if i would have stuck it out, like i had wanted, i would have most likely came home in a body bag as i was in just that rough a shape and my oxygen levels were that low...talk about a good run of bad luck, lose my hunting spot 3 weeks before season opens, then have to miss the biggest run of the biggest fish in over 50 years a week later ) So, i just left a lot of the gear there in camp as it was already set up and the guys needed the gear for a comfy rest of the week. i.e. camp stove, grill, 20 lb propane cylinder etc. ANYWHO, not one to waste, i figured i already burned the gas getting out to my buds in K county, might as well hit the Tri county FWA shooting range for a while. The wife, as some of you may have read before, is a newbie to shooting. What experience she has had with firearms (before meeting me) was decidedly BAD. I have always tried to get her to learn. But i have taken my time, and let her go at her pace. Never pushing, never criticizing. When she is ready to move on she says something. Starting out with .22's then pistols. Well, of late she has been coming along quite nicely and in the recent past has become more and more confident in her skills. Last time out she asked to step up with the new (to me) Ruger Model 44. She fired 3 rounds down range and that was enough. Yesterday, she decided she wanted to take the 44 by the horns and go full bore. I will let the video tell the rest of the tale...to say i am impressed would be an understatement. A lot of guys would have trouble showing this off as it would hurt their pride. (Lord knows i will never hear the end of it from my buddies) But i am at ease with it as she is one of my students. I have ALWAYS maintained that a well trained woman will outshoot a well or better trained man any day of the week. Daddy's PROUD...please ignore my directional dyslexia.... and another....As for me, I am learning that this Model 44 is a FLAT shooter...she hits the same elevation be it 50yds or 100 yds. Me Likey that!! Heres my (poor) results of the session... 5 rounds, slow fire....10 rounds, rapid fire....

yes! Where as i, personally, wouldnt take or recommend a 50 yd shot at a deer with archery tackle....
....its a matter of basic trigonometry or figuring the distance of an angle.
Whats being discussed is a basic triangle. When your up in a tree, shooting out to something one the ground, the distance you are shooting actually increases. It wont be (as) noticeable at closer ranges but as you stretch out your distance, or your height or both, the change in POI will become more noticeable.
Hope this helps.

Awesome find!! I didn't even know Ruger ever made such a gun. Does it use a clip similar to the 10-22? That looks like the perfect deer rifle for here in Indiana. This one is the "Deer stalker" or 10/44 manufactured in 1967 according to Rugers serial number records. The Deer Stalker was produced from 1961 - 1986. The Deer Stalker is a 4 round tubular magazine. Total capacity is 4+1 in the pipe. They also produced the "Deer field" or 99/44 from 2000 thru 2006. That one is a 4 round detachable box "circular" magazine like the 10/22's. Why in the bloody heck the powers that be at Ruger decided in their infinite wisdom to quit making these is far beyond me. They still produce a bolt and a lever action .44 carbine. But no longer make a semi auto. Deer season in IN is EXACTLY why i have been hunting one of these critters. Shes a shooter. I CANNOT wait until my new scope rings get here so i can mount a scope and hit the range and really put her thru her paces. The scopes mounts that were on it were too thick to allow me to use the iron sights, with the see thru scope rings i purchased. So i spent 3 days scouring the internet/phone shopping to finally find a company in MI that produces a set of see thru rings that mount directly to the receiver. Unfortunately they are only produced to accept 1" tube scopes...the new scope i bought for it is a 30mm tube. I intend to sight the irons to 30 yds. (thats all my old eyes allow with open iron sights anymore. ) Then sight the scope to 100yds dead nuts and then see where she hits at 50. A deer comes in @ bow range, use the iron sights.....they try to avoid me and go around, hit 'em with the scope!

For quite some time now i have been hunting for a .44 magnum semi auto rifle. Well, the ONLY company to ever have made such a critter is Ruger. It turns out they no longer make them, nor have they for over 20 years. Gunbroker.com has had a few from time to time, but I wasnt thrilled with paying the amount of money they wanted for them + shipping fees + transfer fees. Then i finally spotted one locally. It was in a shop on consignment, but after closer examination it turned out he wanted STUPID money for it. In discussing my dilemma with a couple of my gunnut friends, they suggested i tag along with them to Indy and the Indy 1500 gun show. Well it being a Sat. and me not having anything else planned i figured WTH, take a road trip with a couple friends and drool over guns sounded like a great way to burn a Sat. Sat. arrives and we leave the house at the butt crack of early (0500) and get to the indy fair grounds good and early. We were some of the first in line to enter when they opened the doors. We wandered about for a couple hours looking at the wares. My buds traded off what they brought to trade and purchased what they came to purchase. But i had yet to see what i was looking for. I had seen many Ruger 10/22's and butt loads of .44 mags in lever action, both blued and stainless but no Ruger Semi Autos. I was about to despair when across the aisle i see it!! So i bolt across the aisle, shoulder 4 guys out of the way, pick it up and it IS a Ruger Model 44. Out of an estimated 100K guns (both vendor and private owned) I found THE ONLY Ruger Model 44 on the premisis!! Then the dickering began in earnest. After about ten minutes of sharp haggling, i turned over a handful of bennies. I even came in $200 under what i had budgeted for the gun! (its amazing how the sight of a fistfull of benjamins takes the bicker right out of a seller ) I then promptly blew all the savings on .44 mag ammo, .44 240 gr JHP bullets, a scope and assorted other reloading equipment. Sunday morning, i promptly headed to the local range to test this new rig out. I was worried about function and wether or not it shot straight. It had a clean bore and plenty of rifling but one never knows when dealing with a 44 y/o firearm. Well, it turns out the rig shoots fine and groups very well...it actually shoots better than i do. She has a few "flaws" or "character marks" on the stock but i figure thats to be expected from a 44 y/o gun. Its obviously been used and has most likely taken her fair share of game. Hell, i am 41 and have more "Dings and character marks" then this gun does.(see below) Now for some pics.... As purchased... "Character marks"...After mounting sling, new scope and rings...i will be mounting different rings and scope as these dont work for what i am intending. How she groups...

A thought...
HUGE gun and knife show, over 1500 tables, in Indy this weekend. I know i will be there Saturday hunting a Ruger Model 44 or an AR-15, stainless bushing and barrel for the 1911.

Wish we could use those in Indiana! found this old thread my take is i dont think it would be a good idea....maybe if everyone was a resopnsible hunter but thats not the case,,,,, i think theyre would be wayyyy to many stray bullets flying through the air I disagree! 1) most hunt from an elevated position, therefore the projectile is flying into the ground and not on a flat trajectory. 2) you CAN hunt with a 30-06, 35 rem., 444, 300 win mag etc.....in a Encore platform. so long as the barrel is 16" or less. I would LOVE to hunt with one of my .35's or my 30-06 down here.

Man, i dunno..tell 'em this dad would KILL to have one of my kids interested in hunting!
What reason(s) do your 'rents give you for not letting you get one?
Archery is a great hobby, you can spend your time in the back yard practicing and is a LOT better than MANY things a person your age could be doing. The time spent practicing and hunting is time spent NOT getting into trouble AND it puts good quality food on the table.
I refuse to dog on any parent for the decisions THEY make concerning the raising of THEIR child...but IMHO it doesnt make a lot of sense. So long as you have a quality harness and you follow the basic rules of hunting safety, its safer then driving!

Well, friday, the day we learned of the death of Jani Lane, i went out to Pieres for a show. Some years back i was given a ticket to go out to the Shinedown show. The opening group was one i had never heard of before (as is the case so many times at this venue) well they step out on stage and this little 4' nothing dude in dread locks opens his mouth and my mouth dropped open in awe at the sound coming out! That groups name is 10 years. I've been a HUGE fan ever since. Jesses voice was shot this evening, he admitted to it, so i wont dog him. The show was pretty good. The down side is it was back lit...so all you could see of the performers, for the most part, were shadows. I talked with Jesse (lead singer) after the show (one of the many reason i LOVE Pieres is you can typically hang out and drink with the artists) about that issue...he said they will work on that problem for next time around. Heres a couple vid. clips from the show that i shot. As drum solos go, not the greatest. No Mike Portnoy, Sulley Erna, Lars Ulrich, or Alex VanHalen...but not terible for a reformed guitar player on his first tour as a tubsman. Gotta love a place where the lead singer feels comfortable enough to crowd surf. (you'll see Jesse surfing towards the end of the clip!!)10 Years - Beautiful (w/backing vocals by ME! )10 Years - WastelandCrossfade was the second band on stage friday night and IMHO the best of the evening. They really rocked! Crossfade-ColorsI HATE that damn support post! It ALWAYS gets in the way of good film making!!
Crossfade - Cold...The first band up was an "unknown" group from Columbus OH, that call themselves "Downplay". I have to show some love for the up and comers. I think they did a good job. Downplay - Dark On MeDownplay - Let It DieMuch Much more live stuff from this show and others can be found on my page at www.youtube.com/fmj45cal4u Only Blackstone Cherry, Alter Bridge, Downplay, Crossfade and 10 Years are shot with the new camera...the rest were shot with my old camera and the quality is ahhh a little subpar IMHO.
