Sounds FUN for sure.
Its said fish with big heads and small bodies are starving. Just not getting enough feed.

many moons ago we would catch brookies and simply toss em in a cast iron skillet with butter.
Nowadays when i do eat trout (have developed an allergy to fish so i must be real careful (read: selective) about eating any fish) I prefer them on my tripod grill over a smokey, open fire of hardwoods in camp.
To expand on Greenes thoughts, i have put them in foil, on my grill, with different herbs and spices. Green onions, garlic, lemon juice, butter, salt, pepper in any and all combos work well. Use a medium heat and an indirect grilling method.
Greene, i think your issue with them not being "your favorite eating fish" (altho i agree, perch and cold water crappie are my fave eaters) might be they are fresh stockers...straight from the hatchery. The dog food they feed 'em there gives them an off taste (at least to me)...they dont seem to have that taste when they are wild fish or holdovers that have been in the system for a year or more.
Another trick i have learned is when you are cleaning them for the grill. Put them in COLD water and use a green scotch brite pad on the skin, this removes the tiny scales, dirt, filth and other impurities on the skin, it does help with flavor.
You will be AMAZED at how filthy the fresh, clean, cold water gets doing this.
Hope this helps, enjoy.

Welcome back! Looks like your boy's set up great for next season and beyond. (No, I didn't realize Winchester made bows. ) That's too bad about your deer season. I saw more hunters than deer this season myself. I don't know about you, but I'm ready to do some fishing! Can't wait for those trout reports to start coming in. Thanks DUDE!! You got NO CLUE!! After my deer season getting totally scuttled. (Lost private place then landed an urban spot, set up my stand, sat 3 hours, came back next afternoon only to find logging crews cutting the mature trees on this plot ) My annual salmon camp also got shot in the arse! Went to N. MI, set up camp, was ready to hammer 'em on the biggest run with the biggest fish in over a decade and before i could even wet a line got slammed with a serious case of bronchitis. (Dr said i was lucky i came home and got in when i did....my oxygen saturation was just that low. My lungs simply werent working!) Needless to say, I am SOOOO ready for some trouting!! I NEED to get out!!! By the by... ...Greene, that invitation is still good.

Well guys, i'm back. I took a couple months off from the board, but now, much to your chagrin, i am BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!! Anywho, my son got royaly screwed ( as did I ) out of deer season last year. He had a gun, a place (on private land or so we thought) and he worked hard all summer to get dialed in for that one big shot....) He really wants to hunt in the worst way, but I WILL NOT take him hunting during gun season on public land...just too dangerous. To combat this issue for this up coming deer season I picked up a bow for him for christmas he will be able to handle for next deer season. I picked up a Winchester (yes, they make bows...and DAMN FINE bows they are...seriously thinking about getting one myself they shoot just that nice!) Its a Winchester "Thunderbolt" shoots 290 FPS, weighgs in at 2.5 lbs, has a 7.375" brace height, is 31.5" axle to axle has an adjustable draw weight from 15 to 50 lbs and an adjustable draw length from 17" to 28" . Perfect for a growing lad that wants to hunt. It came with a trophy ridge whisker biscuit rest. We slapped a copper john 3 pin fiber optic sight and hes in business! Working with his new "toy"We are both VERY excited about this upcoming trout season. We will be camping where i hunt trout and when we are not fishing we will be scouting the public land in that area for places to put our stands for this upcoming deer season.

Thanks guys. I don't know what the "funky thing" is you guys are talking about. All I see is the drop tine and his ear. I don't know what I will do if I get another chance at him. Hopefully I just kill a bigger one before I have to make that decision. The last couple seconds of your film look......it looks like a stick stuck in the back of his skull. The wife said "it looks like an arrow." (yeah right) I hope you do get a chance at a better one.

That aint his ear...dunno what it is but its definitely something funky. Chase, dont let these guys get ya down. I have taken a lot of heat for just filming deer and not shooting (back when i actually had a decent place to hunt) The way i look at it is its "Catch and release" hunting!

I actually thought the Bears could pull off the upset last night. Looks those "Dions" are for real. I'm rooting for a Brewers - Tigers World Series, but it's not looking good for Detroit. I duuno man. We have some SERIOUS tests coming up. This week against the 9'ers for one. Harbaugh has them boys PLAYING in frisco. Then Atlanta the week after. The Pack on Turkey day. N.O. the week after. The Pack again @ Lambeau Jan 1. I realize 'any given sunday" but those look to be the toughest tests right now. Being a life long "Dions" fan, i am still waiting for the other shoe to drop and we go on a losing skid. But "The Schwartz" is with us and he (and Scott Linehan and Gunther Cunningham) has the boys playing and their heads where they need to be. That defense is flat out MAULING folks!! Again, being a lifes long Lions fan...the past 5 weeks have been FUN (if nerve wracking (Min/Dallas games)) to watch!! Man, i HATE the brewers...back int he day, when the Brewers where still in the AL they would beat us EVERY time we went down to Tiger stadium. i have NEVER gotten the taste out of my mouth. That might be one of the reasons i gag whenever i drink Miller products. But thats far in the future. We got one on the Rangers last night and need to get another today! I am hoping for a Texas-Cardinals World Series. I hate anything to do with Michigan sports. It's pretty amazing just how much Peyton Manning means to the Colts. The whole team was built around him. you Colts fans are in for a lot of losses when he retires.
Dont be a hater, man!! I maintain my position..it AINT the lord and savior Peyton....its TONY DUNGY!! Mark my words....next year Jim Caldwell is gone and Jim Tressell is the head coach.

**disclaimer** I know there are some safety issues seen in this footage. (finger in the trigger guard, finger on the trigger when not ready to fire, muzzle control) But, I will tell you now, when we got home, we reviewed the tapes and i pointed them out to him. Knowing my boy as well as i do, i can assure you all, it will be a while before he has any more "lapses". At the time I found them to be minor offenses and not worth ruining the good time we were having by jumping on him with both feet. When working with kids you have to balance safety with the good time. In this first clip, it is his first time up to bat with the Ruger 44. He had a bad experience last year when we were getting him ready for deer season. We had his older brothers single shot .410 and a Rossi single shot 20 guage at the range. I had strongly warned him against shooting the 20 guage (i had shot it earlier and found the recoil to be decidedly stiff) but he demanded to shoot the 20 guage. So i let him....after bruising his shoulder he didnt want to shoot anymore long guns. This is why you see/hear his hesitation/fear before the first round down range. Davids first time up with the Ruger .44 mag. - YouTubeThis next clip is his 10th thru 15 rounds down range. He wouldnt admit to it, but i think his shoulder was starting to get a bit wore out. David/Ruger M-44 - 2nd time - YouTubeIn this next clip, the boy steps up for the first time with my .357 mag. I had loaded some rounds just for him the night before. 125 gr FN sitting on 13 gr of 4227. I knew the 4227 made for little recoil as i had loaded with it before but was unimpressed with the accuracy. As its sighted for 125 gr bullets sitting on 15 gr 2400 the bullets fly high. I LOVE how when he squeezes off the last one (i knew the chamber was empty) there is NO flinch in him! David 1st up w/ .357 - YouTubeHis second try with the .357. Better form and even figured out the POA and scored good hit finally. You can hear him getting frustrated by not scoring good hits. Again, its not his fault. Its the load. 20111001150526 - YouTubeAll in all another great day on the range with my bestest range buddy. He jabbered all the way home about how much of a good time he had. As long as he keeps enjoying the trips he'll keep working at and improving. (thus making his old man happy... i LOVE outings with the family doing things we all enjoy) Hes coming along nicely IMHO.
