Gar IS AWESOME!! last summer I slayed them on my flyroad with just a frayed piece of nylon string tied to a hook.. normally they wont get hooked, just get their teeth caught. They were about 2- 2 1/2 ft long. YOu gotta use wire cutters or heavy duty scissors to cut the scales and then fillet em just like any other fish. Plenty of meat on em, It's nice and sweet similar to a bluegill. Just make sure you don't eat the poisonous gar eggs or roe. If youre taking them out of a river like white river, I wouldnt eat a lot of them just once a week or so cause I would think those would be the fish highest in pcbs or any kind of bad things like that, since they are predator fish they would build it up in their tissue from eating other fish.

Found 48 more tonight, walked a cedar thicket for about 3 hours. Came across a couple of loaded trees with about 12 under each and the others just had singles or just a few under them. I don't seem to hear of many people looking under cedars, and i really don't know why cause I find em like crazy under em late in the season. These were not quite "bone dry" but getting there. most were about 3-6" yellows they weighed 1.25 lbs all together.

I was walking into the woods today and was looking at the ground as I walked and when i stopped and looked up I saw a hen turkey about 10 yards from me , it ran off and I walked up to look around a big poplar next to where it was.As I was checking for mushrooms I found a turkey nest fully loaded with eggs. I hope the hen will come back to it's eggs, I'm sure it will. ANd I hope the coons and skunks don't find em! I also found 24 thirsty yellow mushrooms around a few poplars, a dead elm and the majority around cedars. Picked a couple of big ones about 5 feet from the road hiding under some grass in the field near a small cedar.Even those big ones can hide on you. Attachments:

I would have shot the jake lol I got pretty lucky this year. Seems like turkey hunting can either be very easy or extremely difficult. usually extremely difficult lol Hang in there

Not sure why but half his beard appeared to have fallen off like it was being shed or something. The longest part of the beard measured to 10 3/4" and spurs with just over an inch. Not sure on weight, but I got quite a bit of meat off it, more than my first bird. I kept the breasts AND the legs this time, we'll see how good the legs are.

Went out this morning for my last youth season hunt,. I turn 18 in 6 days. Until this morning, I have not heard a SINGLE gobble yet. But I got in right after daylight and setup in some woods where there is a big bluff and I figured I would see if I could call in some hens with feeding calls, and see if they would have a tom or bearded hen with them. So there I sat, thinking "This is never gonna work" Doing some crappy sounding purrs and clucks on my slate call. a few minutes later i look over to see a big old hen come up over the bluff and look towards me making some soft clucks and yelps. 3 hens came over with her and they scratched around about 30-35 yards away. Then I yelped at her and she got mad and did some more aggressive yelping, which made a turkey gobble right over the bluff from us. That gobble flipped a switch in me and sent adrenaline through my body. I just let her keep on yelping and do my calling for me. Then 5 minutes later i look over and start seeing more hens, about 5 coming from where the gobble was. Then, I see a big ugly white head appear out from behind a briar bush, he flared up into full strut and had the sun glimmering off of him. Then my knees started knocking. lol He finally walked down where the hens had walked, I called to him but he was already focused on the live hens in front of him and wouldn't even look at my decoys.(I was hoping he would see the jake decoy and go to attack it) So he was about 35 yards and I let him have it with my old 12 gauge pump (full choke). The first shot just crippled him, and he was limping and flapping his wings, then i shot him again, and he turned around and ran towards me, where I dropped him with the third shot haha It was very exciting. I couldn't imagine a better turkey hunt. Attachments:

Found one nice grey and a few the size of my fingernail. under a small patch of cedars on a fenceline. bigger grey was growing near the edge of the field. Also found one about an inch and a half tall under an ash.

4/12/14 I took my girlfriend out mushroom hunting for her first time on a spot in public land where people find a lot of early season blacks. We went for about an hour or so and came up with 8 blacks, somewhat decent sized. All under a big old ash about 15 feet from the base and on a south facing slope. Probably missed some, and might have found more if i kept hunting but I didn't want to wear her out or her to get bored so we didn't stay as long. Several others were out and about but didn't see any of them carrying a sack so must have not had any luck.I'd say we need a good rain and some more warm weather. supposed to get frost next week..

jsanders, that's what I wanna do. I wanna get a black lab pup and train it to find sheds. I think I would feel a lot more motivated to go shed hunting if I had a dog with me that would find them for me hahaha Let him do all the work
