strippitman, Last saturday morning when I went they started off slow early in the morning and started getting more active around 8 and shut down at like 9 30. In the evening from what I have seen they are not doing a whole lot of hard cutting until like 30 minutes before dark. I dont know about you, but every time i have been in the woods last few days I have came out COVERED in turkey mites. like 500 or more. I'm not a big fan of that. May have to buy some tick repellant for this saturday.

I got 4 saturday morning and missed the 5th one. I killed the first four quickly and wasnt ready to be done so i kept waiting trying to find a fox squirrel to shoot, and ran into a couple of hickory trees that had about 6 squirrels in them cutting hard. But after missing one they wouldnt give me a good shot and they shut down. Then there was about 8 hunters at the next pull off all shooting shotguns and it sounded like world war 3. Must have not been very good shots. Tonight I went for about an hour behind the house and ended up with 2 cutting on hickory and a white oak that had about 4 in it. I missed several and finally realized i had grabbed the wrong bullets when i left the house and the bullets i used arent sighted in for the gun. haha I also got about a gazillion turkey mites all over my arms and legs.

They sure were delicious! I took the thinner top part of the mushrooms and just fried them up in butter with some flour and then had deer steak with em. I didnt even keep half the ones i found. Only the big ones because I wasnt sure if they were even chanterelles until I did some research and watched some youtube vids . haha And I still got some more in the fridge. I'm thinkin about goin back, pickin the rest and maybe even go on some public land and see how many i can come up with. They were growing in a pretty nice patch. probly close to 2 pounds of them if i picked them all. These I found in a part of the woods with lots of big oaks. White and black oaks. I'm also gonna try to find some hen of the woods later on. I did see that there was a look a like to chanterelles called a "JAck o lantern" which is the same color but when you break the stem it will be orange instead of white . And the jack o lantern will have gills, where the chanterelle has false gills , just look like little veins running up it. The Jack o lantern is toxic.

Found some more, growing on and around another trail through the woods around some big white oaks. I took them home and fried them up and I think I like them better than morels. Hopefully I'm not dead tomorrow lol They were the right color, had false gills like a chanterelle, right smell, right texture, a white colored flesh, and grew in the right environment as a chanterelle so I think thats what they are

Here's a pic showing the fence I made. You can see how well it is working looking at the beans on each side of the fence. It's got an outside strand of caution tape about 2 1/2 ft off the ground with a higher strand on the inside set about 2-3 ft on the inside of the outer strand. used old t posts for the inside strand and cut my own posts from some saplings for the lower one. Used about 1200 feet of tape . 1000 feet of tape was 10 bucks and i had to buy a 300 ft roll for 5 bucks. Since the higher strand is set in from the lower strand it messes with the deer depth perception and they don't think they can make the jump, even though they could. Also, it flaps in the wind with any kind of breeze. had it up for about a month and havent had a single deer inside of it. No signs of browse whatsoever, but before they were eating it back as fast it grew. Those of you with gardens might wanna try this out. Attachments:

Food plots are coming along nicely. Sunflowers got some nice big heads on them, can't wait for dove season! Also, I made a fence out of $15 worth of caution tape and it has done a good job of keeping the deer out of my beans. Although I left about a 1/4 acre of beans for the deer to enjoy. Corn is about 8 ft tall and some have multiple ears. The new clover plot got infested with weeds so i killed it all off and replanted. Attachments:

yeah,Animals could be a problem. Mainly dogs and coons, but I have researched it a little bit and other people have said that it won't be a problem as long as the fish scent isnt on your shovel. I may put a big rock over the top of it to mark the spot anyway. I'd say it won't take that long for it to become a usable compost buried in the ground like that.. I have already thrown in some fish scraps in the hole, and i will add leaves and grass clip[pings with them when i get some more fish.. I also thought about possibly taking some of the fish slime/blood/guts and mixing it in some water and taking that and applying it to the perimeter of my soybean plots to keep the deer out, temporarily. I think it would work until the next rain.

I just have two kayaks, and i really dont think i can shoot from it. I've just been walking creek banks and when it's low enough, the river bank. I was hoping it would get low enough where i could get close to the schools of silver carp that sit below the dam in the river, Last year i could see them, just sitting there in the current, by the hundreds. Couldnt have missed them if you tried. It was close to getting low enough but we just got a bunch of rain today.. The next thought was to take the kayak across the river at the dam and stand by the dam wall and shoot silvers at the base of the dam when they jump. But again, i want to be safe and don't want to do it when the water isn't fairly slow and calm. I wouldnt want to get pulled in or something and end up falling in the water when it's high. So what do you guys do with them when you kill them? How many people have used them for fertilizer/ compost?? I have thought of ways to use them and I have come up with a plan to dig a hole about 10" deep and when i get some carp i'll dump em in the hole and bury em. Then come back next year and dig em up and use the remains/dirt to add to the compost pile or use as fertilizer for the garden or some of my smaller food plots. We'll see how bad it smells hahaha

He sure is good with that recurve, with only one arm. I am still getting used to the whole thing, keep shootin right over them. I know to aim low, but just not aiming low enough i guess. I smoked a 13lb common carp, the first one i shot at, and ever since i've done nothing but miss, miss, miss, miss, hit a log, miss, miss, hit another log, etc. Gone swimming several times to retrieve my arrow. The water in the creek i have been bowfishing in is still not quite clear enough, but caught a few here and there laid up in the shallows or cruising near the surface. I did shoot a big common carp head on straight in the face and the arrow veered right off his head, I guess I just gave him a headache and a nice scar. hahaha Once they start spawning it will be on!

Anybody got any food plots planted this year?
I went a little bigger this year and planted a new clover plot that is 1/4th acre of ladino clover, a 1/2 acre dove + deer plot with sunflowers, corn, sorghum, and buckwheat. And right next to that half an acre of soybeans and another smaller plot of beans where I planted corn last year. I was going to plant a bigger field of wheat in that spot but I had extra seed and i figured it wouldn't hurt anything. I will just broadcast the wheat into the beans. The wheat I planted last fall is ripening now and i've been seeing a few turkeys around it and dusting in the tilled fields. I'm gonna have a two man ladder stand watching over both of the larger plots and my small isolated clover plot where they will start feeding before entering the larger plots. Hopefully I'll actually have some standing beans this year to hunt over. I'm pretty excited about it! Can't wait to watch them grow! I made a bunch of mesh bags filled with irish spring soap to keep the deer away while the beans are trying to get established. We'll see how that goes, I was going to try using milorganite but it was too expensive.
