When you guys shoot your next deer keep the leftover bonepile and use it to bait them. It seems to work pretty good for several yote hunters that I know. You know what really troubles me...I illegally shot at a yote the evening I shot my doe and didn't even realize the season wasn't open yet However, the reason I was trying to shoot it was that the neighbor right next to where I hunt (who I haven't ever talked to in the 15 years I've hunted there) has a sheep farm and they have been having lots of issues with coyotes messing with their sheep. They stopped me one evening after hunting and asked if I could please shoot any coyote I see. I told them I would get on it and try to kill them immediately. So, maybe I wasn't hunting illegally since I was shooting at a nuisance animal However, that coyote showed up out of nowhere and I didn't have time to think about whether it was "in season" or not. And, at 5 yds I didn't want to become coyote bait either that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I made a 10 lb. batch of deer bacon from the doe I shot a week ago. I purchased the seasoning and cure from Curley's Sausage Kitchen. I gotta say I really like it. It tastes alot like bacon but has a different texture obviously. I made this batch exactly according to the directions but I have a change I'm going to try for the next batch. The recipe calls for 80% deer to 20% ground pork. This is fine but I think it would be even better to grind straight pork fat into it and give it a little more of a fatty texture like real bacon has. I will most definitely be making this again! Ready for the smoker In the smoker Ready to fry and eat BTW, the summer sausage was excellent too!

congrats on the doe III. As for the mechanical broadheads, this is the first year Ive used them. My first shot was a hit and fail at the same time. I used my gift card for Bass Pro and bought swhacker. It did not open and I lost a doe on Oct 3rd. Barely any blood and 20 min of tracking before there was no blood. Looked for til 3 am and no deer. I will never use them again, she was broad side and 20 yards away and I watched the arrow hit and fall out. I will never use them again. I decided to try mechanical again and used G5 T3s. They slide back unlike the swhacker that flips open. It worked like a charm. So im still using them. I also use a drop away rest but I flip it up and it stays in the up position until released and drops away everytime. Hope it never fails. I do see the benefit of less moving parts but the mechanical broadheads fly straighter. too each their own Tune your bow shooting fixed broadheads and they fly just as straight. YOu are exactly correct Goose! Also if you use a whisker biscuit rest it corrects the flight of the arrow as it is passing through it. I've never had broadhead fly straighter than when I added the whisker biscuit to my arsenal. Plus, I can get to full draw without a deer hearing me. This is a huge benefit!

Congrats Matt! Sounds like a great hunt. Very memorable! It's kind of spooky being on the ground, with just a bow, and having a coyote within 5 yds! I forgot to mention what I plan on doing with this deer. I am going to try and make something called "Venison Bacon". Seasonings and cure are ordered now I am just waiting for them to arrive. Can't wait to try it. Here's a link to how it's made: forums.mathewsinc.com/archery-4/recipes-21/venison-bacon-83245/It looks so good! I can't wait to try it!

My best friend had one not open on the biggest deer of his life (he's the friend that has all the big bucks on the wall behind the pic of the doe I just posted). If a mechanical broadhead does not open, we've learned that you only get about 2" penetration. I'm a firm believer in having the fewest amount of moving parts between the time you begin to draw your bow til the arrow passes through the deer. For instance, the other day my hunting partner had a doe come past him and started to draw his bow back. He uses one of those rests that flip up when you draw back and then lays back down when the arrow is released. Well, he started to draw his bow on the doe and the rest wouldn't flip up all the way. I've been telling him for two years that one day that rest would bite him in the A$$. He's lucky it wasn't on a big buck. We have since put a whisker biscuit on his bow. You can't beat a whisker biscuit for hunting

I decided to take a night off from sitting a in a tree stand and do a ground sit instead. I have killed far more deer in my life from the ground than I have from a stand although I hunt from stand much more. I am firm believer that ground hunting is way too overlooked by many hunters. It's generally much more exciting too. Anywho..... I decided to sit on the ground in a spot where 2 fencerows "T". One field was standing corn, the other was standing beans, and the third was picked corn. The main fenceline runs between two woods' that I hunt that are about 300yds apart. I cleared out shooting lanes so that I would be able to shoot into all three fields. I also ended up getting poison ivy In the corner of the standing corn, the corn was pretty short and there was tall grass as well as an oak tree dropping acorns. At about 5:30 I heard some crashing coming though the corn so I grabbed my bow and got ready. A medium doe stepped out and was walking right to me and I thought she was going to try and jump the fence 5' in front of me! But, she stopped and kept looking back and then a fawn stepped out with her. By this time she was at about 8 yds broadside staring right at me but not at all noticing that I'm even there. Just as I was about to draw on her I heard more noise in the corn so I waited to see what was coming. It turned out to be a really big doe. She is standing behind the other two as the other two are eating acorns off the ground and then she looks right at me and doesn't notice me either. I wanted to shoot her but she continued walking and then jumped the fence about 15 yards to my left. Now, she is getting close to being directly down wind of me so I now I decide I better just shoot the medium one or else my cover is going to get bown. So at 8 yds I draw and they don't even hear me!! Whisker biscuits are worth their weight in gold!! I'm now thinking this girl is a goner I let the arrow fly and double lung her and she runs about 20 yds and dies in the cut corn about 20 yds from me. At this point it's only 5:30 so I decided I would just stay put and see what else happens...Good thing I did! About a half hour later, 4 does are working their way up the fencerow to me and they stop and just stare towards my direction but I know there is no way they can see. So I keep looking towards the woods behind me to see what they are looking at. I see nothing?? The deer stand there motionless for at least 5 minutes and then all of a sudden I hear soft footsteps coming down the fencerow to my left. It's a coyote! I'm trying to get my bow ready as he is walking past me at 5 yds and then I hurry and get drawn. I ended up trying to shoot him at about 10 yds but shot high because I was in such a hurry and he was trotting at that point. Once again, when I drew at 5 yds he never heard a thing! Incredible! Anyhow, he continued to try to chase the deer all around the field and then gave up. Then a doe with 2 fawns came out and he tried to put a sneak on one of the fawns to kill it but he did not succeed. Crazy, but a very memorable hunt. I love ground hunts Here's the doe: Did you notice all the horns in background (wall and floor)? Those are my buddies. He has shot about 5 deer over 150" and several 135"-150" deer. They were all legally taken. He has some really good urban hunting ground that produces giants every year that he is required to kill several does on plus he can take a buck but he only gets to do it all over thanksgiving weekend.

Very good read Justin! I myself have witnessed some chasing already in this young season. I have also witnessed a buck with a group of 8 mature does and no fawns with them We have also been seeing many does w/o fawns. I was really perplexed as to why this is happening but I think I've come up with the answer. The Drought and coyotes! I believe the drought significantly weakened some fawns and made them vulnerable to coyotes. I shot a doe sunday evening and after I watched her go down I proceeded to witness a single coyote trying to attack a fawn. Luckily, he didn't succeed but this tells me this wasn't his first rodeo! Especially after watching his sly techniques to try and capture it. It was crazy to witness. I videoed it but it was so far away that you couldn't even tell what i was filming.

The only bones I've ever heard of not to give a dog is poultry bones. My old beagle devoured bones and it never hurt him. We had a local BBQ joint where we could pick of pork rib bones that were smoked for hours. My dog would go bonkers over these things. But, I think it all depends what kind of dog you have. I don't think a yorkshire terrier is going to be devouring a big ol' deer leg bone

Just curious but I want to see how well the license bundle sold this year. I went with the bundle but most guys I've talked to did not. Many of them didn't want to spend $65 right up front to deer hunt. They all decided they would take their chances and buy each license separately as needed. I believe most, if not all, of these guys will end up regretting it by the end of the season since they are all multi-season hunters. So, what indiana deer hunting license did you buy?

New logo? Did I miss something? When did you guys come up with a new logo? It's in all of our 2012 videos. Have you ever watched any of our videos?? I didn't pay close enough attention to realize this was the new logo.
