My buddy, "Yoteslayer Mike" came down last night for an opening day coyote hunt. He's got a couple new toys since the last time we hunted together.....the new FoxJack decoy that mounts directly to the call and operates via the remote....
This is much more handy than carrying around the jack-in-the box decoy. He also has a new red lens scan light...
I was armed with a 12 gauge with 3" #2's and a tactical flashlight mounted for anything that came close, and Mike was using his RRA AR-15 .223 with some 53 grain handloads.
We set up in a cut corn field and Mike started out with a woodpecker distress and it didn't take long before we saw movement as I scanned the light. Turns out it was a HUGE owl that had swooped down at the decoy. Another critter had come in too, but from the size of the eyes it looked like either a coon or possum. Mike tried a pup distress, and then tried some howls and that woke up the other yotes. Sounded like a pretty good pack a few hundred yards away in the woods. He tried a rabbit distress and a few other calls, but we never could get a dog to come in. The owl made another visit and this time I followed it with the light. Pretty cool to see. We tried calling 1 more spot, but we didn't have a good place to set where we could see over the corn stubble, so it was going to be tough shooting if we did get one to come in.
Gonna be too windy tonight, but hopefully we can get out again soon and give it another try.
