I want to hear everyone's best hunting story! This is probably my favorite hunt, my first bow kill. This isn't a very big buck, but it's my most memorable. I have hunted since I was 10 years old, but had never bow hunted. When Chase started hunting I knew that a couple weeks in November wasn't gonna be enough for him, so we picked up a couple used bows and started practicing. When October finally arrived we were ready! One day when the kids got home from school, we decided to go out for a while. Chase would be in a stand over a trail where the deer usually enter our woods, and Booey and me would be about a 100 yds away in our buddy stand with our old 8mm video camera. I had just bought a new hang on stand and it took me longer than expected to hang, I had made enough noise to scare away every critter within a mile and was soaked with sweat. We finally get in the stands and I have sweat dripping off my nose and I'm just trying to cool down. We had been in the tree about 15 minutes when I hear a crunch behind me. I turn to look, and here comes a buck! I'm shocked. I turn to Booey and tell him a bucks coming and his eyes get huge! I get my bow ready and Booey gets the old camera ready. The buck comes within 15 yards and stops. It's a shot I should be able to make blind folded, but of course, I manage to make a bad shot. The shot was to far back and I was disgusted with myself. Chase and Booey had brought their Nintendo DS's so they could chat back and forth. Chase sends us a message after the buck runs off; he had drawn a picture of a buck with an arrow sticking out of its butt! Thanks for the sympathy son!! We sat there until almost dark before getting down to check the blood trail. We found my arrow and checked the footage and decided we better leave it until morning. I found it the next day just over the hill from where I had shot it. It's a hunt I'll never forget, because I had my 2 favorite hunting buddy's with me! Here's the video; keep in mind that this was on an old 8mm and my cameraman was 9 years old! This is also the buck that Chase used for his "skull mount" video;

Since I only have 2 deer to my name it would have to be the one killed last year with the bow. I started out in a stand on the edge of our bean field with woods to the north of me. The wind was blowing pretty fierce and chances are if I had a shot it would be right into it. So I got down on the ground, found some cover and waited. I remember checking my phone to see what time it was (5:50pm) and thinking another 1/2 hour I'm calling it. Shortly after looking at the phone I stood up a little to stretch and saw the buck walking over a hill coming right to me. It was probably comical to see me settle back down behind the cover and prepare for a shot. As he got closer I was starting to pull the bow back but didn't want to spook him, too late. He was on to me. He trotted right past me within 10 yards but I was pulling the bow back as he was going by. I started grunting hoping he would stop and he made a u turn back and stopped. I put the 30 pin high and close to his neck (wind factor and an issue with my bow, since fixed). Let if fly and hit him! Problem is it was now dark enough I was shooting at an outline of a deer with antlers; I had no clue where the arrow made impact. He bolted out of there and into the woods. I call my sister to tell her I shot one and would need help tracking. Her and her husband show up and we start tracking. The time is now a little after 6pm. It took a little bit before we found blood. My dad had showed up to help with the search as well. We eventually lost the trail and we were getting hungry. It was now after 8pm.
After a night of bowling and beer drinking me, the bro in law and his 6 yo boy set out to find the deer. My sister later met up with us and we split up into 2 groups. I decided to check a ditch line running through the woods (thinking less resistance for an injured deer; down hill and not much in the way). I walked about a 100 yards down the ditch and seen something...it was my arrow and right next to it was the deer! Now this ditch runs north and south and the blood trail was showing he ended up in the ditch by coming from the west. He never used the ditch to run. I followed the trail back to west and quickly lost the large blood spatter. In all I think this deer ran 2 to 300 yards back into the woods. Woods that had been recently logged as well. I was afraid he had took shelter under a down tree. The beauty part is since the woods got logged we have a nice road going through it. It's not truck capable but getting a quad back there is no problem. Well, that's my story. Quite lengthy when I type it out like this.

This is a GREAT thread. Awesome stories guys! I'll have to decide between a couple, or maybe I'll just post more than one. Don't have time right now, though.

Well, let's see. The more I thought about this, the more hunts I started remembering. My favorite hunt by far was last years Veteran's Day Buck because my best huntin' buddy, Catfish Sam, was with me. It was also the first time I'd ever completely turned a buck around rattling. He had followed a doe out of sight , so I started rattling and brought him to 10 yards. Should've seen Sam's face! He was still glowing when Troy got there to get some footage an hour later. I'll never forget the hard hunting and eventual taking of the "Desperation Double" Troy and I did this turkey season. But the coolest hunt would have to be several years ago during deer shotgun season. I was hunting out of a fork in a tree behind Troy's house where I had killed deer before. Hadn't been in the woods very long when I heard something coming. It was a decent 8 pointer. He stopped broadside at about 40 yards, so I took the shot. Felt like I made a good shot, and he went about 50 yards and dropped. He fell with the white of his stomach toward me, so I could see him pretty well. I still had a doe tag, so I decided to stay in the tree and try to fill it, too. 30-40 minutes later, I see a deer coming my way and I'm thinking "this is going to be easy." As it gets closer I can see that it's another buck a little nicer than the one I'd shot. It gets closer and closer, eventually getting within 20 feet! All I can do is watch. He finally leaves on the same trail the other buck was using. I look over where the other deer is laying and I see NOTHING! I get my binoculars and can see that the deer I had shot is now standing up and the second buck is heading straight for him. The deer I shot snorts at the second buck and he's not amused. He drops his head and gives my buck a pretty good lick, and down he goes. He's feeling pretty good about himself now and continues down the trail. My buck, apparently a glutton for punishment, snorts again while laying on the ground. The other buck returns and starts gouging my buck in the rear end actually pushing him around on the ground. He does this for a minute or two and eventually leaves in the other direction walking within 15 yards of me. Believe me, the redneck in me wanted to take him, too, but I just watched him leave. Too bad this was way before I ever thought of taking a video camera in the woods with me.

Although I have been fishing my whole life, hunting was something that I did not get into until fairly recently. That means that I don't have any really great hunting stories like some of the ones posted on here. However, there are two short stories that I think really sparked my interest in hunting into what it is today. Hopefully, I will have a new story to tell after this season, but for right now these are the best I can remember. The first story happened about 8 years ago. It was when I was 11 years old. This was the first year that I was allowed to start shooting my dad's old .22 rifles. I had been practicing all summer and was a pretty good shot, but had never really thought of shooting something before. Then one day while at my aunt's farm, where all my shooting is done to this day, we noticed a fox that was very sick with mange. This fox was barely clinging to life and looked to be in a lot of pain. There was also the risk that some of the livestock would get sick if the fox wasn't disposed of. Luckily, I had my .22 and was able to take aim at the fox and put it out of its misery. It was a very good way to get my first kill because I barely had time to think about it. Even though the fox wasn't in season, the risk that it posed to the livestock and the pain that it was in prompted me to end its life. My second story happened the year after my first story. It happened during November. Once again we were at my aunt's farm. There was snow on the ground and it was a pretty quiet day. While sitting in the house, we heard the gravel crunch in the driveway and looked to see some family friends who are dog trainers. They came out to give their young dogs some work with some caged quail. Being able to go out on an ATV and watch them work the dogs, really made me start thinking about hunting as a serious hobby. Anyways, those are my stories. Nothing major, but I'm glad that they happened or else I might not be into hunting today. Troy, if you start a best fishing story thread, then I have a great story in mind.

One of my first deer hunting trips ever, last year, was uneventful at first. Me and My brother had to go to a dinner at our grandparents too. So as i climbed out of our borrowed stand. I saw a HUGE head. this was bigger than i had saw ever. I had the buck fever but my brother didn't and quickly pointed out that it was one of my dads missing cows.)-=

One of the places where I hunt is also cow territory so you have to be aware of what's behind a potential target or it could turn into an expensive deer hunt. The owner said, "You shoot it, you buy it". The plus side would be a freezer full of beef. I'd hate to pay for a whole cow though.

Troy, if you start a best fishing story thread, then I have a great story in mind. If you've got a good one, then let's hear it! I'm sure we could all think up a good fishin' story. Great stories everyone!
