It's just around the corner and I'm ready to go. Gonna try Troy's grilled squirrel this year too. Troy are you doing the squirrel contest this year?

I gave it a whirl yesterday evening but nothing was happening. It was very calm but I did not see nor hear a single squirrel. It didn't look like the hickory nuts were getting hit yet which that is usually where I get them when season first opens.

Today was my first day off since season opened, but I didn't get out. Spent a couple hours in the woods widening the old 4-wheeler trails for the Ranger and didn't see any squirrels. Saw plenty of deer flys and horse flys though! I probably won't get out for a while with this heat coming in.

I went out yesterday and seen several, but the woods I hunt in turned out to be infested with skeeters. I only got one and had to leave before I was drained completely of my blood. Took a pic for the contest mid cleaning because I forgot to take one before and my phone locked up. Don't know what happened but getting it looked at tomorrow so I can post it for the team. Since the mosquitoes were so bad, I bought a Thermacell. Anyone use one of these while squirrel hunting?

I have found thermacell's to be highly effective against skeeters. However, the infestation you are dealing with may be more than it can even handle. I have found the Thermacell to be about the most effective tool to use against those pesky skeeters.

I probably won't get out for a while with this heat coming in. That's what I'm thinking. After a very cool, damp summer it's hard for me to believe that we really, really need rain up here in the northern part of the state. I would like to see the temps drop too...apparently so would the squirrels.
