I have found thermacell's to be highly effective against skeeters. However, the infestation you are dealing with may be more than it can even handle. I have found the Thermacell to be about the most effective tool to use against those pesky skeeters. I am going to try it out but at a different location that has more hills than strip pits and marshy areas today. I'll let you know how it works in the infested area later. I need time to heal up from the bites of yesterday.

I got 4 saturday morning and missed the 5th one. I killed the first four quickly and wasnt ready to be done so i kept waiting trying to find a fox squirrel to shoot, and ran into a couple of hickory trees that had about 6 squirrels in them cutting hard. But after missing one they wouldnt give me a good shot and they shut down. Then there was about 8 hunters at the next pull off all shooting shotguns and it sounded like world war 3. Must have not been very good shots. Tonight I went for about an hour behind the house and ended up with 2 cutting on hickory and a white oak that had about 4 in it. I missed several and finally realized i had grabbed the wrong bullets when i left the house and the bullets i used arent sighted in for the gun. haha I also got about a gazillion turkey mites all over my arms and legs.

I gave it a whirl again last night. We had some storms roll through in the late afternoon/early evening and it had been pretty windy all day. After the storms passed through, it calmed down (cooled down a little too)rather nicely so I thought it would be a good time to go. Well, once again, I didn't see or hear a darn squirrel. There doesn't seem to be a thing going on in the hickory trees in my area yet but maybe there just hammering them hard in the morning and laying off for the day . I think I will wait till saturday morning and give it a go then.

strippitman, Last saturday morning when I went they started off slow early in the morning and started getting more active around 8 and shut down at like 9 30. In the evening from what I have seen they are not doing a whole lot of hard cutting until like 30 minutes before dark. I dont know about you, but every time i have been in the woods last few days I have came out COVERED in turkey mites. like 500 or more. I'm not a big fan of that. May have to buy some tick repellant for this saturday.

"2 out of 3 ain't bad"...no I'm not singing an old Meat Loaf tune either I actually got 2 squirrels for team Fuzzy Nut Busters. I killed the first two tree rats that I saw but the third was just too high in the tree. I missed him 3 times before he made it into a hollowed out tree The first one was in a walnut tree but he didn't appear to be cutting any nuts. The second one was up in an old cottonwood (I think) and came down the tree barking at me because I was carrying his buddy around He stopped on a limb about 20' straight above me and was barking like crazy. He ended up eating a .22 shell for his last meal. Both of the first two that I shot almost ended up landing on top of me! I needed a cameraman with me to capture it...Troy? Then a little time passed and I was on my way to the truck and I heard some leaves rustling around above me in a maple tree. There were at least 3 squirrels in this tree. They were breaking off leaf covered twigs in the tree and taking them somewhere. I'm assuming they were building a nest I was having a tough time getting a clear shot without them moving all over the place. Finally, one stopped with a bit of an opening but was about 40'-50' up in the tree. I gave it the old hail mary but no luck. I shot two more prayers at it but notta! Oh well, I headed back to my truck and put my gun away and started cleaning my first squirrel. As I was cleaning it I heard some noise in the tree above me and looked up and there was a squirrel watching me cut up his buddy. I tried to get my gun out of the truck and loaded back up but by then he was jumping limb to limb. I'm assuming he didn't want to end up like his buddies so he he got the heck out of dodge Here's the two: (Sorry about the blurry pic, it looked fine on my phone)

Well we are lagging behind on the contest but at least you got out. Since having another baby and her going back to work and the Army putting her on orders, I've had a heck of time trying to get out. I wouldn't mind the temps dropping about 30 degrees but I'm gonna try this evening in the skeeter swamps where I hunt. Seems to be more there around the walnut trees and beech trees.

The forecast looks a little bit cooler for this weekend, so I'm gonna go try to up our point total between showers.

I tried yesterday after work between the showers we had here and I only seen one. Got 2 the day before. The Thermocell did awesome when there was no wind. I wonder if the smell of bug spray would get to the squirrels and scare them? Gonna have to try anyway. So much water is just sitting around in my hunting grounds, skeeter breeders. Poured sweat out like crazy yesterday.

Has anyone been getting out? I went Saturday morning and there were lots of squirrels but I couldn't connect. I went 0-2. The rats were pretty active and I couldn't get them to sit still long enough to get shots off. When they would sit still they would be so high up in the tree that I either couldn't find them or they would just be too high to shoot. I probably would've gotten a limit if I had the shotgun with me but I don't like to take them that way. I hate digging all the shot out of the meat. I'm thinking it's getting time to invest in one of those high powered pellet guns

So it just occurred to me that the 2015 squirrel season has been open for a few days. I can't believe how much the seasons sneak up on me the older I get! However, the mosquitos are so bad that I won't be hunting these boogers for a while. Good luck to anyone who can get out!
