Set my ztrap dp yesterday for the first time. I baited it with a piece of sardine inside then smeared a little peanut butter on the top and then a marshmallow covering the opening. Today the p-butter and marshmallow were gone, but the sardine was still inside. I'm wondering if a deer didn't come along and eat the marshmallow and lick off the p-butter? If it was....I'm just glad it didn't stick it's tongue down the trap!! I also had a foothold sprung. It was a set at a big hay bale where I'd jammed a deer leg under the bale. The leg was pulled out and the trap was empty. This is the second empty foothold I've had. I'm afraid these old coil spring traps aren't strong enough to hold anymore. Might put them on ebay as "vintage" and put the money towards some new ones for next year. A friend of mine who has been trapping coon for a long time using DP's told me he always slides the marshmallow onto the trigger. That way the coon has to activate the trap when trying to get the marshmallow off. He also told me that after putting the marshmallow in he fills the rest of the cup with cat food (meow mix or some other hard type cat food) but occasionally he will put sardines in it. He says the problem with sardines is they freeze up and make the trap useless. It has worked well for me. If I use sardines, I will usually just set a few sardines next to the trap to bring them in. After they eat the sardines they will almost always go for the goodies in the cup. Also, I would be a little hesitant on selling those old traps. I'm pretty sure you could find replacement springs to get them working like brand new again. HTS had a pretty good supply of parts. I think you could take your old traps over there and they could set you up with the right parts. If not, I would probably be interested in buying them to hang up as decoration in my basement.

My trapping has gone to... well, you know. Got my 220's I had just bought that day underwater, hopefully it'll go down some soon so I can find them! I thought I'd start experimenting with some snares. Caught one possum, then the next day a coon! but that bugger somehow got through a little bitty loop? and got caught around the waist. He then apparently climbed a low hanging limb, but fell over the other side. Which made him hang himself. I felt terrible getting to the set. The snare had cut him all the way down the side, to the bone. and his paws were ripped to the bone from pulling at the snare. Needless to say I'm pretty well done snaring. I also had a beaver in a 330, but I was a stake short that day and just ran a stick into the muck. Didn't work. He pulled it, and floated somewhere out under the ice I suppose. Walked for miles and couldn't find him.

I even saw where a guy caught a mouse in one!

Well, I got my new yote traps set yesterday. I'm not too sure how well they will produce since we got a pretty good snowfall with drifting overnight. Even though my site setup is now snow covered, I hope the Yotes can still smell the nasty bait and will still come into it. Can't wait to check traps tonight after work. I only got 4 out of my 6 traps set because the frost line was making it miserable to prep the site. Looks like I have a few things to learn about coyote trapping in the dead of winter

New years eve had a mink and two rats! Double coons yesterday, but let them go dueto them being tiny. One coon and two rats this morning! I used cat food and some jelly for bait. I just put a few pieces of cat food in the dp, a few outside and and then ran tge jelly all over and on top of the trap. Its cherry jelly my neighbor made but it didnt set up right, so its like the consistancy of a thicker honey. It smells sweet and the coons seem to love it!

Anyone trapping any beaver? Ive got several good places, just havent had the time to get out there. Its about a 4 mile walk to hit 2 holes that are full of beaver. Kids usually keep me too busy to get out there.

I went to set some beaver traps over break. I had two 330's and apparently as I was setting the trap into the mud the safety hooks slipped off.. Anyway it ended up going off as I pushed down and right onto my thumb. Not broke! But I think I tore up some nerves, as the top of my thumb still feels like its asleep. Part of trapping!

I'm afraid of that when I set my 330. I can only imagine the pain. The 110 still leave a mark but I don't want to imagine the 330 on any part of me.

Had something in a live trap last night and whatever it was went right through the side! I'm thinking... Actually....it looks like coon hair that was left behind....but it took 2 big dumps while in there that looked like coyote scat. Black with lots of hair in it. Funny thing is; I had it baited with leftover baby carrots. Whatever it was tore the heck out of the trap....there's a couple smaller holes other than the big one.

This whole trapping gig sure can leave you scratching your head at times. I believe I set my first 'yote sets on December 30th. I picked up a coy dog the first night. Less than a week a later I pulled all my sets because there was just too much snow to make it worthwhile. Well, 3 evenings ago I got out and was planning on setting a bunch of sets out but it was just too wet so I ended up only getting one out. I checked the next day and nothing had happened. Last evening I went back and checked it again and I also got the rest of my sets placed. When I checked the one I already had out it was sprung. WTH?? That's twice I've had that happen in the same location. How do you think a trap springs without catching something? The weird thing is when a coil spring trap "goes off" it jumps up in the air. It looked like this one was just setting perfectly where I had set it other than the jaws were closed with no animal in it. I'm baffled at how this happens. My pan tension is set in a way where a little weight is required to move it, so it's not a "hair trigger".

Was there any falling debris or snow that may have hit the pan?
