Anybody doing any of it? My toll so far; 5 coons (one behemoth!), one muskrat, 2 grinners and a squirrel. I was hoping to startmy water trapping for rats and beaver soon, but the ice is gonna make that a little tougher. The one rat i caught was actually in a blind set for coon or mink.

It's funny you already started this thread because I was gonna start it myself. Anyhow, I'm picking up some traps this weekend and gonna make my first go 'round as a trapper and see how it pans out. Hopefully, I have better luck than Troy has had so far

Theres a duck hunter who owns a pit on 40 acres on the edge of our property. I started watching it for him, did a little work on it for him, pulled a few rats out for him last year. Beaver have came up the ditch to it now and are doing some damage. There more rats than last year, and a few coons working the edge. It seems like a perfect place to pull a bonus mink too! I've always heard coon and mink are drawn to springs as salamanders and crayfish stay there when it gets colder? They may have froze out now though. Anyway it'll be a nice little piece to pull some fur on, lots of variety. Plus I'll get to test out my colony traps Im building.

Hopefully, I have better luck than Troy has had so far Hey now, I've just been farting around in the backyard so far.....I'm gonna start getting serious this week. Checked 3 ponds today and didn't find a single rat run, but I did find lots of coon sign. I've got a couple more ponds to check, but it ain't looking too good right around here for muskrats. A guy at work was telling me about his dad catching a bobcat and I asked how he released it; he says "Uh, it was a 220 conibear." He had to turn it in to a CO....Sullivan County. Good luck Brad! Sounds like you've got a honey hole.

Tonight I will be setting my first trapline I've ever done. I'm pretty excited. I'm gonna put a few sets out for rats and I have about a dozen Dog Proofs (Dp's)for coon. I'm gonna pick up a few 330 conibears at my local fur shop this weekend because the beaver are really working my woods now. I'm hoping to get some beaver Sorry, had to say it.

Nothing again this morning. Traps are probably all froze up anyhow. The snows still coming down so I'm not gonna mess with them until tomorrow. I've got 1 dp out and yesterday on the way to check it I found a cup along the road and I used it to cover the trap. I punched a small hole in the top and then put a little bait on it. I figure it should work as an attractant plus keep the ice and snow out.

Well, I feel like I am having some success so far especially with how cold it has been. I've picked up a rat and three coon (2 big ones). The one coon walked off with my DP but I found him about a half hour later when he fell out of a tree about 30 yds away because he couldn't climb with my trap stuck on his one leg. Luckily I got my trap back but unfortunately I couldn't locate my stake. It was kind of funny, we were trying to find the coon that walked off with my trap and I had pretty much giving up. All of sudden, I heard clank, clank, thud and I actually caught it out of the corner of my eye. I know instantly it was the coon that had my trap! He tried climbing back up the same tree but he couldn't get very far and I shot him out of the tree. I gotta say this has turned out to be more fun than I ever thought it would! My youngest son can't wait to go out and check the traps. Plus, he gets to shoot the coons that are in them. Totally exciting for an 8 yr old! Coon #1

That's awesome Matt!! I've got a missing dp story too. I was coming back from bow hunting a couple weeks ago and was checking the traps along the way. I get to where I had a dp and it's gone. I had it double wired to a small tree and I could see where the coon had gone up and down the tree 2-3' and figured it had done this enough times to break the wire. I go home cursing myself for not staking it and get the 22 and go back to start the search. I thought there would be drag marks to follow, but I didn't see any. Probably spent 2 hours making huge circles around the area and scanning the trees with the binocs, and beating the brush. I finally go back to where the trap was and get down on my hands and knees to try and pick up the trail....and that's when I see the blood. Evidently a coyote or dog had come along and took my coon, along with my trap. Guess I can't 100% rule out a human taking it, but it was pretty much in my back yard and highly unlikely. Now I'm staking the coon traps same as the coyote traps.

I had mine staked with a 2' rebar T-handle stake and that big old coon pulled that sucker out of the ground! I couldn't believe it! Wow! I stopped by Spurlin's the other day and they had a bag of Berkshire disposable stakes with cable and ferrules so I just grabbed it. The cable was precut to 20" to make 15" stakes and I was a little concerned about their holding power. Well, today I went down to the woods to pull a trap, brought along a 5' pry bar to get the stake....and couldn't pry it up! I think it must of grabbed a tree root or something, but that thing wasn't budging.
