My father-in-law just bought a Savage Axis .243. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet or even hold it for that matter, but for the money Savage makes a pretty good rifle. They have changed the name of the Edge to the Axis. It's the same gun but I guess they ran into some copyright issues with the Edge name because of the shaving cream and something else. He wanted something that he could shoot coyotes with in the pasture as well as something that would put down a cow if and when the time came. I advised him to go with the .243. It's plenty for what he wanted and the ammo won't break your bank like some other calibers. I'll let you know what I think when I get a chance to shoot it. His came with a middle of the road scope and I think he paid something like $340 for a brand new 2011.

from what I've seen on the EDGE, It appears to be a DAMN nice rifle. Of course this is coming from the guy who owns a 110, which is basically a predecessor to the edge. all in all, its a great design, comes in a caliber you prefer, and is VERY user friendly on the wallet! Do what feels right.

I am a huge fan of Savage rifles and the Savage brand. They make high quality products at a great price. They are accurate right out of the box and just feel good to shoot. The couple of Remingtons that I have shot have not really impressed me. I'd go with the Axis.

unless you find a sale or buy in bulk, I've found that ammo prices are pretty similar between stores. I have found a lot of great deals on the clearance racks of Gander Mountain. Not sure if you have those stores in Indiana or not.

You could always use the benelli for yotes too. They make predator specific loads now that are "supposedly" capable of 70 yard shots. When Chase and me called a while back he was packing the .243 and I had his benelli loaded with 3.5" BB's.

Deffinately manageable. I shot 18 rounds tonight gettin it all squared away, and I'm not hurtin TOO bad. I think you would have NO PROBLEM with an 30.06
