[DNR] Review safety guidelines before turkey hunting this spring
Event Description Hunters should review hunting safety guidelines as they prepare for spring turkey season.
The youth turkey season is Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21. The general spring turkey season opens Wednesday, April 24, and lasts through Sunday, May 12.
Indiana has not had a fatal turkey hunting accident since modern day turkey hunting began in the state in 1970, but the state averages one or two shooting accidents a year during turkey season.
Complacency often undermines the safety of even experienced turkey hunters. The most common factor in hunting accidents is the shooter failing to identify the target. Shooters and victims are more likely to be experienced hunters, and shooters are more likely to shoot a hunting partner than a stranger.
Turkey hunting safety guidelines are available at dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/2710.htm. Every hunter should make a copy of the guidelines and hang it at camp or keep it in his or her hunting vehicle. Most of all, hunters should frequently review the guidelines before and during the season.
Safety guidelines for turkey hunting are:
— Select a calling position where you can see for at least 50 yards in all directions and where you are protected from the backside.
— Whistle or shout to alert approaching hunters of your position. Never wave or stand up.
— Never sneak in on a turkey or use a gobbler call near other hunters. Never crowd another hunter working a bird.
— Always keep your gun’s muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and never shoot at sound or movement.
— Use a flashlight when walking in the dark.
— Be aware of turkey "fever" and its prevention. Disregard peer pressure to bag a bird.
— Be extremely careful using turkey decoys.
— Do not wear red, white, or blue outer or exposed inner clothing.
— Make sure your head net doesn't obscure your vision.
— Don't assume you are the only hunter in the area. Be certain of a companion's location.
— Know and identify your target and what is beyond before you pull the trigger or release an arrow.
— Discuss safety techniques with companions.
— Never assume that other hunters are responsible.
— Be sure the barrel and action of your gun are clear of obstructions.
— Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
— Always keep your gun unloaded until ready to use.
— Never climb a tree, a fence, or jump a ditch with a loaded gun or nocked arrow.
— Never use alcohol or drugs before or while hunting.
— Respect property rights and secure permission before hunting.
Indiana Conservation Officers encourage hunters to use the TIP (Turn In A Poacher) hotline to file a complaint or report a violation. The toll-free TIP phone number is 1-800-TIP-IDNR (1-800-847-4367). Complaints also can be filed online at tip.IN.gov. Possible New World Record Redearake State Fishing Like This Page · Thursday Mike Phua might have caught a world record Redear Sunfish pre fishing for a bass tournament on Lake Havasu in Arizona. The fish weighed between 5.7 and 5.9 pounds in the boat. The current world record redear (also landed at Lake Havasu in 2011) weighed 5.55 pounds. Mike's fish should surpass the previous record pending being verified by a certified scale. Please "like" and "share".

Actions Indiana Department of Natural Resources
Turkey draw for Reynolds Creek Gamebird Habitat Area
The drawing will be at the Kingsbury FWA office at 10 a.m. CST on April 6. To be eligible for the drawing hunters must present their 2013 turkey license and they'll be given a numbered badge. A computer generated random draw will identify the successful hunters for choice of the hunt periods. Hunters will be drawn as individuals only. If successful you may give your hunt to a youth hunter 17 years old or younger.
Once a bird is harvested the hunt is completed. There are no “stand by” drawings. If successful you will be given a special permit card with the hunt period you selected. Keep this card with you at all times. You don't have to check in at Kingsbury, you can go directly to Reynolds Creek. If successful at the Reynolds Creek drawing you will NOT be eliminated from any other DNR turkey draws.
The hunt periods are:
April 24,25,26 April 27,28 April 29,30, May 1 May 2,3,4 May 5,6,7 May 8,9,10 May 11,12
Kingsbury is located at 5344 S. Hupp Road, LaPorte, IN 46350. For more information, contact Kingsbury at (219) 393-3612 or rlorman@dnr.in.gov.

It's long over-due that our DNR starts giving anglers some good maps.
The idea of DNR selling topo maps is obsolite, not to mention how old some of them are.
When I first started on the web I bought abunch of them, had them cropped and re-sized, and put them on the web for free. Even the US geological sociity maps are very old.
It seems like DNR should just give away their maps on the web. Instead they choose to sell maps that are almost as old as I am, or older.
Most of the map companies use these maps and sell them in books.
Their maps are outdated and have changed. They are not very acurite anymore.
It's one of my pet peeves that DNR still sells them.
I've looked at other state DNR websites, and Indiana is the only state I have found that sells them. All the other states I looked at have them posted on-line and are free.
I could go and gripe about the DNR fishing reports, but I think I'll save that for anyday.

Wow ! Sorry to hear about your back FatBoy Dan. I've already been there and done that, and it's not fun. Mine is in the lower back, but I'll bet it's twice as bad in the neck. Good luck with the back ! I'll watch for you at the show it I go. I'll wait to see what other people say about it before going. Hey, what ever did happen to that wrestling bear ?

Your asking a very good question ? You'd think they would be proud to show off a monster buck like that ! I haven't been to the show for 6 or 7 years. I just got fed up with the same old stuff year after year. Doubtful I'll go this year. I don't think anythings changed with that show since I was a kid, except the wrestling bear must of died. Congratulations Hunter Dog Carrie on a great buck !!
