I use a Sako 75 in .308 for all my serious hunting Brian. I just wish I had've got the stainless synthetic model though.
Rifles used here would be just what you guys use there really. All different makes and models and calibres. Off the top of my head, most common would probably be(in no particular order) Winchester Tikka Sako Remington Howa Weatherby vanguard(not WBY Mark V) Browning etc
cals for deer 243 260 270 308 30/06 35 Whelan 300WM and up. There are heaps in between though Some guys hunt Sambar deer with .458WM. Sambar seem to be armour plated by some people, hence the big cals. Sambar have a minimum cal of 270.

Cheers guys, similar to here then Private property is free. However, the regulations have changed in the last 2 or 3 years and you have to buy a 'GAME' licence for $40 a year. Hardest part is finding a willing land owner though.
We can now hunt in about 460 odd state forests in the state of NSW. You have to be licenced for this though and be a member of a hunting club. Forest licence is $60. Club licence varies, mine is $80. I think it's quite cheap though. Total forest area of huntable land is around 2.2 million hectares. Forests are restricted to hunter numbers, they work on 400 hectares(1000 acres) per hunter. You can shoot as many deer as you want in these forests(most people don't though) Only 3 forests out of 460 is there a 1 buck/stag per season rule.
The state of Victoria, hunting licence(for sambar deer) costs about $47 per year. It's more if you hunt with dogs. No limits on the amount of hunters though.

How much is it for a licence over there? Is it a deer only licence or a shoot anything type of licence?

Nice fish, pity you didn't boat him. He looked just like a Barra when he came out and shook his head. Good stuff.

Yeah, they are good eating Troy. And Anthonydykes( or dykesy, much more Aussie) when I read you eat Kookaburra wings, I thought WTF. I just googled them, haha, never knew. But not a proper kooka though.
BTW, I nearly lost that bigger fish. The hook came out right at the end and a wave was only 1 foot away from freedom. A quick scoop and throw up the beach saved the day.

Caught these on fresh prawns(what you guys call shrimp) off the local beach. 12 foot beach rod, egg beater reel, 10lb mono line. Top one is a Bream (31cm) Bottom is a Tarwhine. (40cm) Pepsi for comparison And while I'm posting some pics, here's some kookaburra's in my back yard the other day.

Cheers for the replies guys. It's interesting to hear what you guys can and can't do. A bit restrictive I reckon. But, I'm pretty sure you have a huge hunting population over there, whereas here, we don't really.

Haha, good answer.
If I come over mate, I'll let you know. They look quite tasty actually, I'd have a go.
Nah mate. We don't go after frogs. We have big friggen cane toads though, but the barstards are poisonous.
Not sure if our possums are like your possums.

Nah mate, we don't. Only thing that comes close is called a Possum. They are native, so you can't touch em. Years ago, someone took them to New Zealand, they are a huge pest over there. I don't think they eat them though, and the Kiwi's will eat anything. They make things out of their fur though.

Hmmm, everything that isn't a chicken, tastes like a chicken.
Cool, I would never have thought of eating those little buggers, good stuff.
