I took a ride on the atv around the field the other day to see if I could find anymore sheds and I kicked up what I thought was a hawk, but once it got up in the air I could tell it was something different. The under side was white with black tips on the wings and it's back was grayish with white and black specks. I went home and checked my bird book and the closest thing I could find was called a Mississippi Kite, but it still wasn't quite right. I went to the Goose Pond DNR site and looked at their bird list, www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-GoosePond_BirdList.pdf, and started googling the different raptors and I found my bird! It was a male Northern Harrier. I couldn't get my camera out quick enough to snap a pic, but here's one I found on the net... It was a very cool looking bird. The crows sure were giving it a hard time! (I didn't find anymore sheds by the way.)

I think that we will just keep seeing more and more different birds in the area due to the Goose Pond.

Seen my bird again today! It was dipping and diving over a field that's next to the Hillenbrand FWA west check-in. Very cool to see it soaring in that wind.

I had another interesting weird bird encounter a couple days ago. I was walking around the yard and heard some bobwhite quail talking back and forth. One of the calls was coming from a tree over my head. I look up and it's a blackbird making a perfect "bob-white." Then it makes a hawk's scream! Then a crow call and then back to the bob white. At first I thought it was a starling; black bird with yellow beak, but this one had a solid black body with just a small marking behind it's eyes. The closest I can find to it on the web is a "eurasian blackbird," which is actually a thrush and related to the robin. It was certainly talented!

I had an experiance with an osprey yesterday. I was cleaning fish on the dock, and an osprey swooped down and smacked me in the face. He was trying to get our fish, so I threw a carcass in the yard, and it came back and got it.
