Since I was fortunate enough to fill my buck tag on Monday, tomorrow I'm going to get the beagle hounds out to shake off some rust. I have a 5 month old pup to start this year so I'm pretty pumped up to hit the briars. Just curious if there are any rabbit hunters out there and what your choice of weapon might be. I've been using a Ruger 10-22 the last several years but may try a .22 revolver some this year. Love a challenge but its a good thing my family doesn't have to live off of rabbits.

I love to rabbit hunt, but haven't had much luck with beagles lately. Our last one could run the heck out of a rabbit, but was gun shy. I had let her loose to run around last spring and she took off and never came back. A buddy at work has beagles and wants to get together and video a hunt this fall. Have fun out there today, Jon, and let us know how you did! Our beagle Sally who disappeared last spring:

Willy ended up going with me so we just took "peanut" my four year old female and "Chubbs" the pup. My other two dogs are my best runners but they don't handle so well. We went to a little patch across from my father-in-laws, the last time I took "Molly" and "Maggie" there they got into the neighbors chickens. They didn't do any damage and the people were real nice but I didn't want a repeat. The first rabbit we jumped went straight to a hole, which is common for this place. The next one was a decent run but I didn't get him. I did get some shootin' though. I had my H&R model 999 .22 revolver so the bunnies were pretty safe. This one had his ears laid back and I'm not sure I could have hit him with a boomer. The last rabbit we jumped didn't want to get out and run. He just hopped around this be honeysuckle patch. He must have seen me try and shoot at the first one though because he hopped out of there once and just squatted. I fired and maid a pretty good shot, great towards bad distance. about a foot short. I love to shoot that little nine shot revolver though and love to here the dogs. All in all it was another fun day with Willy. No rabbit stew though.

I have a .22LR revolver. Its a Heritage Rough Rider. It also came with a .22 Mag cylinder. I love shooting it. Is yours single or double action?

Mines a double action. It is not an expensive gun at all but I really like the feel of it and it's real convenient to rabbit hunt with because I can holster it and not have to lug it around. It's way more accurate when I cock it, the trigger is a little hard, so I'm pretty much one and done on rabbits. Anything after that is just a hope and a prayer. But as an old huntin' buddy used to say "when there is lead in the air, there's danger".
