Tap, tap, wham...tap, tap, wham...BAM! A Yellow Perch "double" coming up from 35 f.o.w...a closer look and you see that one of them is 11" and the other a plump 13" erie yellow perch. "Up and down, up and down" as fast as you can rebait and send it back to the bottom and tap, tap... another double is on its way to the cooler.
Just ask Rick Nichols (1eyechaser) brother-in-law. Bill Cabanaw and he'll tell you what he told me, "Capt. Rick this is the best day yellow perch fishing I've had for a long time and I have been coming to Lake Erie for 20 years." Water temperature was 72 degrees. We were slaying these Jumbo Yellow Perch on "spreaders and "crappie rigs"...actually I don't think it really matter what you put down on the bottom and lifted up several inches...these Lake Erie yellow perch were extremely agressive, not to mention hungry.
Tried our hand Smallmouth Bass fishing with these seasoned South Bend, IN fisherman. Bill banged 12 nice smallies and was top dog using a carolina rig, but watching him battle a 5.5 pounder was sweet.
South Bend, IN. angler Bill C. with a feisty Erie smallmouth bass aboard the Erie Quest.
Leonard with a 20+ inch Lake Erie smallmouth bass, caught with live bait.
Found one spot in particular near a drop-off and rocks...we waxed 'em good there!
Caught our limit of Yellow Perch twice this weekend and only had one boat come within miles of the Erie Quest...the Jimman.
Lake Erie Yellow Perch fishing - has been excellent the last several years. Good August thru October. Anchor fishing with emerald shiners is the best method to catch these tasty fish! Don't be afraid to run the boat motor for several minutes while fishing for these tasty fish.
Bob and Skip with some of the many doubles we caught this weekend. mmm good to eat!
Average Perch size was 11 inches, with 6 Yellow Perch over 13+ inches on this fine day. Some really nice Jumbos!
Cooler full of Yellow Perch...with a lot of "Jumbos"...plenty of non-stop up & down action!
Thanks Bill, Ron, Leonard, Skip, Bob, Dave, Sherrie, Mike, Roger!
