This year, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife issued 1000 general permits - 250 bull tags and 750 cow tags - for its quota hunt. New for this year is five additional tags for youth hunters. Youth hunters drawn for this hunt may harvest a bull or cow elk. For bull elk, there are two separate weeks of bull season. The first week, is Oct. 3-9 and it is open to the first set of 125 bull hunters. The second week, Oct 10-16 will be open to the second set of 125 bull hunters. Archery season is Oct. 3, 2009 through Jan. 18, 2010. Crossbow season is Oct. 3-18, and from Nov. 14 through Dec. 31. For cow elk, there are two firearm seasons. It will be open during modern deer gun season Nov. 14-23 and then will re-open again on Dec. 12-25. Archery season is Oct. 17, 2009 through Jan. 18, 2010. Crossbow season is Oct. 3-18, and from Nov. 14 – Dec. 31. The Youth WMA Elk Lottery hunt is Sept. 26-28. I think I'll start entering the Kentucky elk lottery. It's only $10 to enter.

Sure would be nice if some of those elk would make their way north and settle here? Ok Troy, $10 to enter lottery but what about tags or licenses? We're out of state too so you know its' got to be higher.

Compare that to what you'd pay to go out west and hunt elk and it's probably a bargain though.

I just spent a couple of days down in Kentucky (not hunting, work related) and talked to one guy who has entered the drawing since they started the program and he has never been drawn. I think he said '88 was when it started or the introduction of elk in the state was that year . He also knows some people who have drawn back to back bull tags.

That's the thing about Kentucky's drawing, the guy that put's in for it for 10 years has the same chance as the guy puts in for it the first time.
