Looking for excellent walleye fishing and the chance to experience world-class smallmouth bass fishing first hand, then maybe Pelee Island is the place for you. Pelee has provided years of summertime sanctuary from a stressful, fast-paced world for many a family and fisherman alike.
Although it's the by far the biggest island in western Lake Erie, Pelee has experienced significantly less development than most of its neighbors, such as South Bass Island. It is also no secret that fisherman have won many walleye and bass tournaments in these remote, pristene waters, created by the glaciers some 10,000 years ago.
Unlike the dozens of bars and restaurants at Put-in-Bay, Pelee Island has a total of three places to dine or drink. The island has few stores and no public transportation. Pelee's only grocery store is a seasonal business that's open only between spring and fall. The rest of the year, islanders buy necessities at a Co-op.
On Saturday morning I departed Catawba Landing with a group of seasoned Indiana fisherman from the Ft. Wayne area. Curt Barner, Doug Blackburn, Mark Herring, Jerry, Mike, and Heath were certainly ready to experience one of Lake Erie's best locations to fish, with very few fisherman within miles.
Curt Barner shows off a dandy Smallmouth Bass caught in the Canadian waters of Lake Erie abord the Erie Quest, Aug. 8
Smallmouth Bass or Black Bass as the Canadians refer to them...are native to the Great Lakes. Nice Job Heath!
Tap, Tap. Thump!
The sensation shooting up the fluorocarbon line was not the result of the weight bouncing off a rock. And it certainly wasn't generated by the diminutive taps of a goby. As Heath Gertis lifted the rod tip skyward, the rod blank loaded into a satisfying arc. A few quick turns of the reel handle coupled with an aggressive but controlled snap of the tip and yet another battle with the bronze beast was on.
The fish tipped my hand-held digital scale at just over three pounds. A solid fish but, quite frankly, it was just above average on this incredible August summer day
Nice Smallmouth Bass caught on a Drop Shot Rig aboard the Erie Quest near Pelee Island, Aug. 2009
Lake Erie is rapidly being recognized for its superb world-class Smallmouth fishing...just ask Jerry Kage
After catching a Limit of 35 Lake Erie Smallmouth Bass on Sunday morning, practicing "Catch & Release"... we switched gears and tried our hand at Lake Erie walleye fishing and we would not be disappointed!
Indiana anglers Curt and Mark show off some fine August walleye fishing in Lake Erie
August is here and the walleye fishing is hot and heavy, well depending on where you live. The classic dog day patterns of Drifting-n-Casting Mayfly Rigs, as well as open water trolling dominate many Lake Erie walleye catches, but don’t forget about breaking out your night fishing gear if you are so inclined.
Light action sport fishing equipment and live bait are deadly when Lake Erie walleye fishing, Looking Good Heath!
Lake Erie walleye are known to prowl the shallows at night searching for an easy meal of shiners or perch.
Mike caught several dandy Lake Erie walleye while Drifting & Casting a copper Mayfly Rig with Erie Quest. "Low-n-Slow"
Thanks for the great trip Curt and crew! Tight lines....
