I recently finished building a homemade electronic predator call. The total cost for all the parts plus shipping came to a little over $50.00. I haven't got to use it in the field yet, but it sounds great. I thought that I would post a how-to thread in case anyone is interested.
Parts List: (all the parts are availabe thru Radioshack's website) www.radioshack.com
1) 1 4"x 6" 50-watt Indoor/Outdoor Power Horn (Part # 4001440)
2) 1 6ft. Shielded Cable, 1/8" plug to stripped wires (# 4002434)
3) 1 6ft. Shielded Cable, 1/8" plug to 1/8" plug (#4202420)
4) 1 1/8" Stereo Plug to 1/8" Mono Adapter (#2740374)
5) 1 Mini Audio Amplifier (#2771008)
6) You will also need either a portable CD player or MP3 player. I used a cheap MP3 player that I found at a closeout store. I tested both and the MP# player had much better quality.
7) Soldering Iron and Solder
Once you have all of the parts, putting it all together is pretty easy. You only have to make one solder.
Steps:
1) Solder the ends of the power horn wires to the stripped end of the 6-ft shielded cable. (parts list #2)
2) Plug the 1/8" plug of the cable you just soldered into the External Speaker hole in the Mini Amp. It will be marked EXT SPKR.
3) Using the other 6ft. cable, plug one of the ends into the other jack on the amplifier and connect the other end to the mono adapter. (parts list #4)
4) Finally plug the mono adapter into the headphone jack on the MP3 player or CD player.
5) Install a 9V battery into the Mini Amp.
The call is now fully assembled. The next thing you need to do is get some call sequences on the player that you are using. The ones that I use are free and are available at the following URL. varmintal.com/ahunt.htm
Just scroll down a little bit and you will find the MP3 files of a bunch of calls. You can either use his premade sequences or make your own by arranging them into a playlist. I just use the premade ones. The premade sequences start out with two minutes of silence. This allows you to set the call in a field and get back to your blind before the calling begins. If you make your own sequences, be sure to start with the silence file.
I also keep my call in a camo bag that I had. This keeps it hidden and everything together.
Here are some pics of my call.
The call outside of the bag. You can see how everything is plugged in. I wrapped the solder in electrical tape.
This is the call in the camo bag I use.
The next thing I might do is spray paint the power horn camo.
If you make this call I would like to see the pictures of the finished product.
If you have any questions or problems with making this call, I would be glad to answer any questions.
