Been wanting to do this ever since I first learned about it and now I'm finally going to! Gail and some of her family are flying down to the Astor Fish Camp in a couple weeks and I've decided to join them. Was looking for something the whole family could do together and noticed the scallop season opened yesterday. Found a charter that could accommodate all 8 of us and booked it. I'll be paying close attention so that I can take my own boat sometime. This is over on the gulf coast in the Crystal River area, about 1hr 45min drive from Astor. Can't wait!

Here's the charter website of the one we'll be using. All of them I looked at had really good reviews but this was the only one that could accommodate 8 us without using 2 boats/captains. explorida.com/scallop-charters/

That looks like some fun. We went snorkeling for an afternoon on our trip to Hawaii last month. I wasn't thrilled with it, but the kids loved it and hated to stop.

We were out in Boston a couple of weeks ago visiting my wife's family and I booked a lobster charter. We had a blast hauling lobster pots. And we were able to bring home a nice haul of lobster for a big meal. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Have fun on your excursion.

That sounds like a blast Matt! You can snorkel for spiny lobster in the keys and I would love to try that someday. Our trip was a great time! In fact I think itβs my new favorite thing. Kind of like mushroom hunting under water. π Here was our ride for the day. Iβll post more pics and a video at a later date.

I'm putting this here for future reference. We passed this boat ramp on the way out to the bay and there were hardly any trailers parked there. Our captain said it's really nice and under utilized although I see in the reviews that it can get really crowded on weekends, as do the scalloping areas. Fort Island Trail Boat Ramp

That looks like a blast! I love snorkeling and mushroom hunting so this would be right up my alley. I will have to keep a trip like this in mind for the next time I'm down in Florida. Thanks for sharing!

The little town of Crystal River took a hard hit from the hurricane. Lots of storm surge and flooding. I saw a picture of the dock we launched from and itβs underwater and the water is in the buildings. π

Was just telling Gail about this video where they are getting scallops in Steinhatchee in pretty shallow water. She wants to find a spot where we can find them shallow because last summer it was too deep for her where we were. Anyhow, they are broadcasting live from Steinhatchee today because that's where they're expecting Debby to come ashore. They had just finished rebuilding from last year's hurricane. π
