I haven't done much ocean pier fishing but after watching some of this guys videos I might have to change that! Can't believe some of the fish they bring up there. I've been chatting with Vlad from the video on facebook and he invited me to join a Flagler pier fishing group. Good news/bad news about the pier, it will be closing and torn down soon but replaced with a concrete pier. This wooden pier has been there since the 1920's and has been shortened by hurricanes more than once. They expect it to take up to 4 years to complete.

Hope you get a chance to get there before it goes away.

Tried the Flagler pier for the first time yesterday. Actually started at the Moody boat ramp on the Matanzas River because we could tell that the surf was all churned up. Gail caught a blue crab and I caught a decent sized sail cat. We all got snagged on the rocks under the bridge too. There was a family there catching small whiting, croakers, and catfish on every cast from the fishing pier there. Moved down the road to the big pier and after paying the $18 fee for the 3 of us to fish we dropped our lines. Gail immediately got snagged on someone’s old line and broke off. I swear I did more rigging poles in the first 2 hours than fishing! 😂 After a short while I caught a small flounder and unfortunately that was about it. Gail decided to go live on tiktok and soon as she did her pole took off! I grabbed it and whatever was on was pulling the line out so fast it burned my finger. It shot for under the pier though and broke her off before she could even fight it. We were out there until after dark and I added a small jack that I kept for cut bait or crab traps.

I'd like to hit this up in November when we are in the area! Here's another spot you might check out. Gail has been in Florida the past couple weeks and one night they stayed in St Augustine ghost hunting lol. She drove the coast on the way back to Astor and discovered this park south of St Augustine near the Mantanzas Inlet. She didn't have her fishing stuff but she saw lots of bait fish and other folks fishing and kayaking. Think I'll check it out next time down. Helen Mellon Schmidt Park goo.gl/maps/ovFppuVpC8b4yj386

I'd like to hit this up in November when we are in the area! Looks like it will be a no go for November. Hurricane Ian took out a big chunk of it.

I’m still waiting to hear from the property management of our rental to see if the steps down to the beach are still usable. If not we might have to use an extension ladder lol

Divers are under the pier today assessing damage. Even if it is able to reopen it won’t be the same. There was 162’ of pier lost during the storm and another 123’ was damaged beyond repair.

I read on a Flagler beach Facebook group that it was coming down next year anyway to be rebuilt. Don’t know the accuracy of that

Yeah I said something about that in my original post. Hopefully the concrete one will be Hurricane proof!

Here we go again! Nicole might as well take the rest of the poor old pier.
