Been a slow start to the speck season down south. Dad took a tumble out of the boat before he even got it in the water and broke a rib and then we caught the covid to start our trip. The folks have managed a few nice catches and one of their friends from Kentucky is having a pretty good winter so far.

My only catch so far. I had a nicer one on but it got off when I went to flip it in the pontoon. π

My winter is now complete. Love those big crappie pics. Sorry to hear about your dad's "spill". Hope he heals up quickly.

My only catch so far. I had a nicer one on but it got off when I went to flip it in the pontoon. π Seems like I have seen one of the Bell crew lose a dandy crappie before when they were trying to flip it in the boat.

Mom and Dad had their best day of the year this afternoon with 11 keepers. It was 30 this morning so they waited until it warmed up to the 60βs this afternoon and it paid off.

Sounds like they made an excellent decision. Glad the catching is picking up.

Anyone else see that the St Johns River Crappie Masters event last weekend was won by 2 locals fishing out of an aluminum boat with no electronics? With "cane poles" to boot! Gail was watching the weigh in live on Facebook and now wants to try it. I'm in!!

Forgot to mention this, but when Gail and I were drifting with minnows we got into some baby wipers. The wind was moving us around and making it hard to just drift down river. We went from 20β of water down to 4β to 7β and got into a school of the little hybrid stripers. Caught 4 before I could get us back over deeper water and 2 of them swallowed jig and all.

A pair of 1lb 14oz SLABS from Mud Lake this morning! I fished that lake with dad one time and itβs really shallow. You can only fish it when the river is high.

Those are some real dandies! I sure hope your mom and dad get to do some fishing in something other than their down jackets and hoodies this year. Lol. One more week of cool temps, then hopefully some heat moves in.
