Good luck to those venturing out in the morning! Most consistent advice I’ve read is stay close to the roost...they won’t want to go far.

Dad came out to go with me this morning. The birds weren't roosted close so we didn't have any hot action early, but we stayed patient and around 8 we had a tom cross the road to our field. He seemed spooked by something and went back. His buddy following him didn't get the memo. The second tom hung around for what seemed like a long time about 100 yards away staring a hole through our decoys. Curiosity finally got the best of him and he ran about half the distance in then got cautious again. He got to about 35 yards and made that dreaded alert cluck. Like a snorting doe, I knew he was about to bolt. I raised my gun up more like I was shooting a duck and popped him. I was really surprised he came in close enough for a shot. It usually doesn't end that way when they do that much staring from a distance. Thanks for tagging along Dad! We need to get you one now!

So yesterday at work we were discussing turkey vests and I was saying how I need to get one, maybe after season on clearance. Within minutes of that conversation I check my email and get a sale ad from Rogers Sporting Goods with a turkey vest with added goodies. I figured it must be fate so I ordered it. I also got an extra $5 off for rewards I didn't know I had. It shipped same day so I should have it by Friday when I’m off to hunt again.

Rogers is usually really good about their shipping and this time was no exception. Ordered my vest around lunchtime Monday and it was delivered about the same time Wednesday. Seems like a really nice vest with lots and lots of pockets and a nice thick butt pad. The magnet doesn't work as well as it shows in the video but it might just take some practice to hit the sweet spot for it to stay up. It also runs large, it says in the video it will fit small/mediums up to 3XL but I'm a big guy who usually wears 2XL and this vest feels big on me, I have the straps almost all the way tight. Can't imagine a little guy wearing this. I'll try it in the field in the morning.

Like the Cubbies say, "Next year"! True! 😂 It sure wasn’t from lack of birds. I came real close to getting it done in the rain yesterday. Pulled a sneak on a Tom and hens out in a field. I got within 50-60 yards of the birds and eased up against a tree about 10 yards from the field. The hens eventually started feeding towards me with the Tom following. He was pretty fired up, strutting and gobbling. He was just out of range when one of the hens was right in front of me and her damn “Spidey” senses kicked in. She yelped and he gobbled, then she did the dreaded scared/excited clucks and ran back right past the gobbler with the other hens in tow. He was still in full strut and just slowly turned and followed them off. 😢 At least it had my heart pumping pretty good and warmed me up a little. I was soaked! I get back to my truck at Chase’s and there’s a bunch of birds in the field across the road from his house and at least 3 are big toms. I tried to pull a sneak on them but there was just too many eyes I guess. They were all gone when I got through the little woods I snuck through. Chase, I got the Ol’ 20 cleaned and oiled up last night so it will be ready for next spring.
