So Gail's son is doing a destination wedding down in Englewood, Florida this April. Gail and me are going to fly down to our place on the 19th and stay there until the 24th when we go to the gulf front rental Gail has lined up. I said I would never go back to the Englewood/Manasota Key area again without my kayak and that's the plan. We're gonna pack up our fishing stuff and pull the kayaks down to the gulf. Also bringing my crab pot to do a BIG shrimp boil for the wedding. I'm sure we'll do some fishing around Astor before we head farther south, I would LOVE to get into some of those big spawning bluegills or shellcrackers(redear). I haven't decided yet what we'll target over on the gulf. This area is known as one of the best inshore fishing areas in the world for redfish, snook, and sea trout, but because of the red tide that lasted something like 16 months fishing for these species is catch and release only. That emergency rule has just been extended to May, 2021. I'm sure I'll do some fishing for those but I'd also like to do some catch 'n cook fishing too. It looks fairly easy to catch small sharks in the area so that's something I'll try. Been wanting to catch one ever since I watched a video for buffalo style shark! I found a website for a local bait shop that has a crazy amount of info on it. Fishin Franks Bait & Tackle is the shop and I've spent hours on their Where to Fish Map Pages. We're gonna be on the west coast for a week so I'll only get to fish a sampling of all the fishing spots in the area. After the west coast trip we'll be back in Astor for a couple days before flying home on May 3rd. Should be quite the adventure!

Man, a lot has changed since I posted this less than a month ago! We're still planning on going but who knows if we'll be flying or driving or even allowed to do either one? I don't see much of a chance for her son's honeymoon cruise to happen that week either.

I don't see much of a chance for her son's honeymoon cruise to happen that week either. I wondered about this. We had a cruise planned for the first week of April and had to cancel it. Since that got canceled we decided we would go to Vegas because one of my wife's friends was supposed to get married the week that we were supposed to be on our cruise. Of course, that has since been canceled too. This world has changed more in 2 weeks than any of us could've fathomed. This is unreal and I can't wait til we get back to normal again! UGH!

Well, the wedding has been postponed of course. Gail still wants to do the trip but the flights have been canceled so we'll be driving if we go. She talked to the rental owner and it's still a go if we want it. They promised extra cleaning and disinfecting will be done before we get there. Guess we will see how things look at the end of the week...

Tried the bowfishing again yesterday. It was one of those days that I should have stayed in bed. Lol. The first shot I took at a gar my arrow hit it sideways somehow and broke the nock off. Luckily I had a backup arrow but the nock on it is to big for my string so you have to hold it on. Dropped the arrow 3 times when I went to pull back. Saw plenty of gar but they were all safe from my bad shooting. We're down in SW Florida now and this is our view for the next week. 30MPH winds today but hopefully it'll get better this weekend.

Storms today. Did go to the bait shop and fed some huge snook and bought over $80 worth of lures and bait. I'm ready if it ever quits raining!!

Not much to show for a couple evening's surf fishing. A couple whiting and a couple sail cats. We've caught so many hardhead cats my hands are probably permanently damaged from taking them off. Lol. We kept a couple of the bigger hardheaded cats to try but they're so nasty I'm putting the fillets in my crab pots.

Oh, and Gail me fished under a bridge for a while this afternoon and caught some small mangrove snapper and there was a homeless guy there that didn't shut up the entire time.

Got the water heating for a beach boil. 😉 Caught a snook today but forgot to take a pic. The beach has me very frustrated. Just never seen the gulf this rough.

We're scoping out spots to launch the kayaks and Gail hooked into a decent redfish. I caught another small snook, this time on a Yo-Zuri mirror mullet.

I'm a speckled trout away from an inshore slam! Probably not going to happen as we're getting ready to leave. I'm gonna put out a shark pole back at the rental. Caught a big sailcat from the surf this morning.

Another clip from the trip. Near the end is where I tangle with a surf monster.
