Before the monsoons today I was able to open water fish in my little two man bass boat the last 3 days. The pond is about seven acres and, because of the topography, reaches depths of over 23 ft. Over the course of the 3 days, I watched the ice completely melt away and the surface temp slightly increase from 39 to almost 41 degrees. Day one I was totally unproductive trying to use regular 5'6" spinning rods, 6 lb test, and summer crappie jigs.
The other two days I used my ice fishing gear and jigged with tungsten jigs right under the Garmin in 20 feet of water with moderate results. Seemed just like ice fishing on an iceberg because even with an anchor the boat would drift slightly in all directions and spin in the swirling winds. Some picks of my mixed bag follow.
