I've been watching a lot of duck and goose hunting videos lately and one of my favorite parts is watching the dogs retrieve. It's got me wanting a gun dog to bring on our hunts but if I get another dog I would want a pointer because I also LOVE upland hunting. I know some people use German Shorthaired Pointers for waterfowl but from all the reading I've done they aren't the greatest companion in the blind. Mainly because they want to GO most of the time. I ended up doing a google search for the best dog for both upland and waterfowl hunting and came up with a dog called the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. What the heck is this and how am I just finding out about them?! I'm not saying that I'm going right out and buying one, but I am researching them and it is something I'm considering. They aren't cheap either. Funny thing; I was on the AKC website looking to see if there were any breeders close and I saw that someone in Astor, Fl raises them as duck hunters!

I looked into those the last time I was researching gun dogs. Not sure exactly why, but I'm not a big fan.

Well, the more I researched these dogs the more I fell in love with the breed. Problem was there aren't that many breeders and most have waiting lists for unborn pups. I ended up finding a breeder in Iowa that had a couple pups for sale. These were great looking pups but they aren't registered. We headed over yesterday and spent the night then went to check out the pup we had picked out today. She is pretty awesome! We got her from Wapsi River Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. Her dad is akc but her mother isn't, but was the breeders original dog they brought home from Idaho. We are on our way home with her right now!

She is a ball of energy. Was up all night barking then I took her to Mom's today and she explored everything and we're back home and she's still rambunctious. She's gonna wear me out!

Thanks guys. I wasn't in a hurry to get a pup but I happened upon this litter and I guess it was just meant to be. I also got to thinking about the age and with her birth date of 10/28 she will be old enough to hit the field next season. The breeder had 4 pups when we contacted her and they were all gone when we picked mine up. More than I ever thought I would pay for a dog but a lot less than if I had bought an AKC pup. Also, Gail's sister lives in Iowa less than an hour from where we picked up the pup so we were able to visit and drop off some gifts. As for a name...I was thinking about "Astor" or "Sky" and Gail came up with "Daffy" as in "Daffy the Duck Dog." So after meeting the pup she was definitely more a Daffy than the other names. I can also yell "DAF!" better than the other names. So even though she's a bit Daffy, she also seems really smart and I can't wait to see how she turns out!

You could yell โASS!โ For Astor. Then again people might think youโre talking to yourself. ๐
Sorry, just finished reading your fantasy football posts. ๐

Watching her tail go from a full out wag to a dead on point brought a smile to my face.
