Today was my first of 5 days off for turkey hunting. Chase and me were setup at the edge of a field this morning with 4 hen decoys and a jake. Heard plenty of gobbling off the roost. Around 7:00 we had a gobbler responding to the box call, but he was probably 500 yds off and we really didn't think he would come in. Well, he did, he kept getting closer and closer and was gobbling about every 50 yds. He was finally under a 100 yds on top of a stripper hill behind us, we could hear him walking around, but couldn't see him. Then we hear a hen coming in, she's putting and purring and Chase was talking back and forth with her. Then, nothing. The tom clammed up and left and the hen/hens left with him. The only reason we could come up with is that he didn't like the decoys. We're using the Cherokee Sports inflatable decoys and the jake is pretty aggressive looking. After discussing it, we decided to remove the jake from the spread.
Around 9:00 we were talking about going home and getting some breakfast and trying another spot when Chase says "Tom!" A BIG tom had entered the field without us seeing it. He was around 50 yds out and feeding right toward our spread. For some reason he stops, looks all around, and goes right back where he came from. Chase is just sick. This was a huge bird. Even bigger than "Cinco" that he killed in the same spot 2 years ago with the 33mm spurs and 10" beard. The only explanation we can come up with is that these birds are decoy shy. We've never had this happen before, but can come up with no other reasons that these 2 birds would not come in to the spread? At 10:00 we decide to go get something to eat.
At 12:00 we setup in a woods that was protected from the 30 mph wind gusts by some tall stripper hills. We had been there about an hour when I hear some rustling leaves. I look down and there is a SNAKE coming in the ground blind! When I see it, it's head is right behind the bucket that Chase is setting on! I say "snake!" and Chase jumps off the bucket and the snake slides back out. Chase looks out the window and just about freaks; it's a 5 ft black snake! I wish I had some footage of this, but I was so shook up that I didn't even think of the camera until it was gone. Unfortunately, this was the only action we had all afternoon.
Monday morning was suppose to be my brother, Monty's, first ever turkey hunt. It's not going to work out though because he has a sick little girl he has to stay home with. Hopefully she'll be better Tuesday and we can get out together. Tomorrow I'll be trying to video my own hunt again. Hey, it worked last year, so why not give it another try? I'm gonna setup where Chase and me were this morning, but without any decoys. With rains moving in tomorrow evening, I'm expecting a "hot" morning!
