Went to the Deer and Turkey Expo today. Talked with the folks at KFW and got some questions answered. Went ahead and purchased entries for all 4 categories. I believe mid May is when they draw. Chances of actually getting drawn are slim.

I made my yearly donation when it opened up. It's a shame they don't do preference points to give non-residents a better chance of getting drawn.
I've also started making a yearly donation to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for their annual moose lottery.

Back in for 2019! Only this year Kentucky changed it up a bit and now the archery tag covers bulls and cows. So $30 to KFW and still a slim chance of getting drawn. If I remember right they had a sheet at their counter that said non resident rifle bull odds of drawing were 1 in 800(ish). Sounds right. The drawing is in May. I believe you have until April 30 to buy your entries.

The moose lottery would be a great one to win!

I still think my ultimate is to get to Alaska to hunt caribou. I've priced some outfitters for this and it is ridiculously (or stupid) expensive. Even though it would probably be worth plunking down that kind of money for the outfitter if you really want to tag a caribou. A guy I went to school with (who now lives in Colorado) went to Alaska for caribou a few years ago. I don't think he used an outfitter either. He was successful on his hunt too. I need to contact him and get his input. This hunt will probably not happen for quite some time. It is at the top of my bucket list. I think just seeing Alaska itself is at the top.

I think caribou is an animal that has a pretty high success rate if you ditch the guide and just do your homework. With that said, I have heard that caribou numbers overall are on a significant downslide. I'm not sure if that is the case in Alaska or not.

Just made my yearly donation to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Strangely I feel my chances of getting drawn in the Maine moose lottery are better than my chances of getting the call for the Kentucky elk lottery. I think Maine actually gives you bonus points for the number of years you apply for the moose lottery, but I am not aware of Kentucky doing anything like that for the elk lottery.

I was checking the KFW website to see when the draw date is and it is next Monday the 20th. Upon reading the regs page again I noticed that Kentucky is only going to draw 594 tags this year (through all seasons including youth). Just seems low for some reason or maybe I'm wrong and I've never noticed the "low" tag numbers before. Here's the link to some regs for Kentucky elk. fw.ky.gov/Hunt/Pages/Elk-Hunting-Regs.aspx

I wasn't exactly right with my statement above. They did the drawing today and the results will be posted to the KFW website on Monday after 5pm. They did a live stream of the draw. A friend watched the video for the archery tags and no one from Indiana drew an archery tag. I'm not going to watch a video of names being drawn so I'll wait until Monday evening to find out if I was lucky enough to draw a rifle tag.

I saw that live stream going on as I was thumbing through facebook. Someone had commented that 90% of the tags are reserved for Kentucky residents. Not sure if that's true but it sounds about right.

Sounds like you might have better odds of hitting the powerball!

To be expected I did not draw a tag this year either.
