Then I went back to work, working 7 days a week an 10 hours a day out of town. I didn't know if I was going to be able to get any time off for the peak of the rut. Where I buck hunt only, from November 2nd til opening day of firearm is some of the best rutting activity goes on. Once the lead starts to fly(or as Greendog puts it the orange army comes out) the bucks pretty much go nocturnal. But this year seemed not to be the case.
So I got some time off from work an entered the woods on November 8th an saw two different bucks that morning. I got down around 1 o'clock an started checking the trail cameras an there where a lot of good pic's. Then on the evening of November 9th the Muy Grande of bucks come by a big 10 pointer,an could not get a shot because of too many tree limbs in the way. So I waited until he got just out of sight an I grunted at him an he stopped. So I did a snort wheeze an he came back into one of my shooting lanes dead down wind of me. He stopped when he caught my scent,I already had my bow at full draw,I was trying to figure out if I had to shoot over or under a tree limb. At this time his nose is up in the air an he's licking his nose vigorously trying to figure out what it is that he is smelling. Then he pounds his foot into the ground as I go to take aim right behind his shoulder,I know that I'm down to the last seconds of he sticking around. As I'm taking aim I could not see through my peep sight,it had twisted on me. This was the first year that I have used a two string peep sight,I've always used a three string peep in the past an was talked into a two string at the archery shop.
Then on November 11th I had another nice big 8 pointer come by at twenty yards I could not believe it. Just two days ago I had a chance at a pope an young 10 pointer. Now another 8 pointer well out past his ears is heading my way. I took a shot at him, everything looked good he ran about 30 yards an stood there for a second or two an took off like he was going down. I never could find him. Now at this time I'm sick to my stomach,an did not want to hunt anymore. I talked it over with some of my good friends an they got me back up into the tree saddle again.
Now the morning of November 12th the opener of firearm season. I watch as a buck chases a doe around the woods, the stick's where cracking an there was a lot of commotion I could not see how big the buck was it is so thick. So I climbed back up into the tree saddle on the evening of November 13th an thats when this 9 pointer with a drop tine came by at 40 yards. The winchester xp3 found its mark an did its job.
This was some of the most rut activity that I have seen in a while. I saw more bucks than doe's this year.
