This is depressing. I really, REALLY hope the shad don't affect the panfish size in the coming years. And I hope the bass will help keep them in line...

It's sad how slow the government works. It was years ago that shad were first discovered at Shakamak and I heard that the slot limit would go away.

Interesting. Maybe they were holding off to monitor the growth of the shad population before making any changes?

I did a search and the first time I mentioned shad at Shakamak on here was in 2012, so I'm thinking it was probably 2010 when my cousin who works at the park told me about the shad. They were thinking they possibly got there during the flood in '08. I'd still like to see another predator put in there....wiper,walleye, saugeye.

Are the lakes at Shakamak fed by any creeks?

Are the lakes at Shakamak fed by any creeks? No, but there were creeks in places there usually aren't back in 2008!

That was a crazy flood that year.
Are the lakes old strip pits?

That was a crazy flood that year. Are the lakes old strip pits? No, they're man made lakes. Shakamak was the first to be built in 1929, then Lenape in 1933 I think, and then Kickapoo in the 60's.

We just walked in on a weekday and I asked if we could take a tour and the 2 guys working there looked at each other, shrugged, and said sure!
