My 10 yr old son finally bagged a deer last night! It was nice to get a little redemption. This was his 3rd attempt on a deer this year. He missed a nice buck in youth season due to a powder a issue in my muzzleloader, then on saturday evening he grazed the brisket of a big doe at 90yds because the scope was zoomed out instead of zoomed in. He told me after the shot that the deer looked tiny through the scope. I'm pretty confident he would've gotten her had I had the scope zoomed in. Then, last night I picked him up from basketball practice at 4:50 and told him to throw his hunting clothes because we are going on a drive to find some deer to stalk. As we were driving down the west side of my woods I could see 7 deer on the south side. I told him we were gonna go around to the lane on the north side and sneak through the woods and try to stalk them. There is in inside corner on the back of my woods and I knew if we got to that point we would have a real good chance at bagging a deer. Well, about the time we got there all but 3 deer had cut the corner in the L and were gathering at an outside corner further south. The last 3 trotted down with the rest of the group so we decided to sneak down to the far corner of the woods to get on them again. Daylight was fading fast. We got about as close to them as I thought we could get but with the fading light it still wasn't close enough. Suddenly one of the deer heard us moving around and decided to come and take a look. Big mistake! The young button buck stopped at about 50 yards basically facing right at us. My son put the crosshairs of the scope just below the white patch on the deers neck and gently squeezed the trigger. At first neither one of us were sure if he hit it or not but within two seconds the deer was down and my son was going crazy! He spun around to me with eyes as big as headlights and says "he just went down! Dad, he just went down! Holy cow I finally did it!"
Unfortunately, it was a button buck but I'm still proud of him nonetheless.
