My girlfriend has family up in the "thumb" area of Michigan and we went up there for the holiday weekend. Gail has 2 aunts and uncles who live on the Sebewaing River and it's just a short boat ride out to the bay. We had a perch charter booked for Saturday morning, but I talked to the captain Friday afternoon and they had 4 inches of rain the day before and his usual holes had turned to mud and they only boated 25 perch and had fished all day and he didn't think it would worth going out. I'm just glad he was honest enough to let me know the fishing wasn't good instead of just taking my money. We did a lot of river fishing from her uncle's dock and Saturday evening we took her uncle's 24' boat 12 miles out to the "Sparkplug,"but never caught a fish. We were fishing perch rigs with minnows and had a couple crawler harnesses out.
I knew it was only a matter of time, but Gail outfished me all weekend. All I managed was dink perch and a smallmouth, other than a big ol' channel cat that broke my line at the dock. A few pics...
Out in the middle of Saginaw Bay...
You drop pretty much any kind of bait off the dock and catch small perch out of the river...
Gail and her daughter posing with the first catch of the trip...
That tiny perch I'm holding up is about all I could manage all weekend!
We had a great time and I really hit it off with her aunt and uncle who are some diehard hunters and fisherman. They've already invited me back to icefish this winter. Oh, and of course they went back out when we were driving home last night and filled a bucket half full of jumbo perch. They said the smallest was 10 inches...and this was just right out of the river. I was ready to turnaround and go back!!
