Indiana youth turkey season, April 18 & 19Indiana's 2009 spring turkey youth season takes place April 18 and 19. The special season is open to hunters age 15 or younger. Youth hunters are limited to one bearded or male wild turkey. To participate, a youth hunter must be accompanied in the field at all times by an unarmed adult who is at least 18 years old. The youth must be in possession of either a youth consolidated hunting license or an apprentice turkey license. The adult does not need a license. An apprentice license is available to youths who have yet to complete the requirement of hunter education. All persons, regardless of age, are limited to three apprentice licenses in their lifetime. Legal weapons include 10-, 12-, 16-, or 20-gauge shotguns, bow and arrow, or crossbow. All turkeys must be properly tagged and checked-in at an official turkey check station. A list of check stations is available in the 2008-2009 Hunting and Trapping Guide or online at www.wildlife.IN.gov. Youth turkey hunters killed 956 turkeys during the 2008 youth season and 736 turkeys during the 2007 youth season.

Chase and me are setting here waiting for the rain to let up, so I'll tell you about yesterday's hunt. We were only going to hunt Sunday, but Chase talked me into playing "hookie" from work so we could go Saturday. We got up at 5:45 and headed to the spot where Chase killed "Cinco", the big bird we got a full body mount on. We set the Cherokee Sports decoys out about 15 yards in the corn stubble field and got back on the edge of the field against some trees. We heard a few toms gobble, but they were WAY off. Around 8:00 we hadn't heard anything for a while, Chase was to my right and I was leaned over talking to him. I was stretching my legs out a little when I got funny feeling that something was watching me, I look over my left shoulder and there's a big tom staring right at me! Busted! The tom stands there staring for a while, then turns away and heads straight up a stripper hill, then I see the other big tom with him. These toms probably would have come right in to the decoys if they had not seen me move. Chase tried to call them back, but they weren't having it. We were discussing what happened when I see 4 birds coming in to the field from our right and at least one of them is a tom or jake. It looked like they would come right to us. There's a low spot in the field where we couldn't see them for a while and they never did come out. We figured they had just gone up the field and crossed the road. As we're discussing this, 3 deer come from across the road and are running straight for us! The doe in the lead looks like she's carrying twins because her bellies about to drag the ground. They get about 30 yards from us when they catch our wind and hit the brakes. They mill around for a while before turning around and going back where they came from. As we're discussing this, I look out toward our right and there's a red head peaking over the corn stubble looking right at us! The birds we seen enter the field were still there. I guess they had seen us move, because they left the field in the same place they had come from. As we're discussing this , Chase looks to our left and see's a turkey out in the field, I guess she seen us too, because she took off flying out of the field! Geez. All of this happened in about an hour, from 8-9. It was pretty crazy there for a while. I think that if we had been using the ground blind we would have got a chance at one of those birds. Our afternoon hunt was pretty boring, didn't see or hear a bird.

Chase and me just tried to put the sneak on a strutter out in the middle of a field. Got within a 100 yds but he didn't care about anything but the hens he had with him. Looks like there's a break in the rain, so we're heading back out.
