Tonight I had an observation that pretty much tells me what the deer are doing, and why I havent been seeing them. I climbed in my stand tonight about 4:15, got my camera arm set up, bow pulled up, and was messing with something else when I looked up and saw a doe fawn looking at me. I watched her bed down, and realized there was also a button buck with her also bedded down. They finally got out of bed about 5 and walked by me at 10 yards and up to a white oak tree to eat acorns. after 15 minutes of that, they ran back down the hill and bedded down in the same spot as before. About a half hour before dark they got up again and ate acorns. The doe even decided to lay down right in the field. until dark, when I climbed down with them still in the field. I walked out with them standing 25 yards away watching me. Even though I normally wait for deer to be long gone before I get down, these were young stupid ones and I knew I could get away with it. Moral of the story is, these deer only traveled 85 yards from bed to feed all afternoon. I'd say that is probably the case for a lot of the deer right now as well.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones but the deer movement where I've been hunting has been really good. I've been seeing more deer this year than I've seen in a long time. Sunday evening I saw my first sign of bucks scent checking does. I even thought I was gonna get to see a brawl between two hefty 8's. I don't think it will be long until you start seeing some pretty good action in your woods...sit tight, things are about to turn on!

Hmmmm, maybe your area doesnt have as many oaks as we do? I"m lucky to see 1-2 deer a night , if any. We are just covered up in gigantic white oak trees down here , all producing a BUMPER CROP, even trees that normally don't produce. I have not seen a deer in the bean field for awhile, nor have they been hitting the corn. I have seen does browsing in my small turnip plot of a morning. Once the acorns rot, and the does come in heat, it will def pick up

We do have many oaks. However, just like humans deer need variety in their diet. Last night in a two hour period I watched the same group of 5 does come from a woods 1/4 mile away to my woods. They fed on acorns for a little while just inside the woods from a standing bean field. Then they went out into the beans and ate for a while. They headed south about 400 yds and stopped in a freshly picked corn field and fed in there for a little bit. Then they stopped and ate same acorns on the edge of my other woods. Then they went west for a about 500 yds (stopping and eating occasionally along the way) into my buddies food plot and he watched them feed like bandits in there. He has an oak right next to the plot and he said they would eat acorns for awhile and then walk out and browse on his still green beans and then back to the acorns.
I hunt almost exclusively along edges of woods and field or on fencerows. I almost always see a lot of action from my spots but many times it isn't near me. My hunting partner hunts almost exclusively deep in the timber. I gave that style up many years ago because I was sick of blowing deer out of the woods as I was coming in. My buddy isn't seeing much at all happening inside the timber and he thinks I am lying about all the deer I've been seeing roaming the open fields. Obviously I am seeing mostly doe but it won't be long these doe are dragging bucks along with them. Good luck and keep at it!
