Hey fellas. I've heard rumors going around of a few changes, but haven't been able to find anything. Anyone heard of being able to DEER hunt with a 30-30 and 223 this year? I've always been under the impression Indiana was too congested for any high powers. Also, I've been told that SILENCERS are legal for hunting now. Justin, Troy, anyone???

I haven't heard this but I was told that Indiana is too populated for high powered rifles by a conservation officer. If they open that up, I bet that the population will drop dramatically. Silencers I doubt will ever be legal for deer hunting. You can hunt with anything if you are hunting coyotes, so it might be possible for the rifle change. I'd like a silencer on my .22 for squirrel and rabbit though.

There has been talk for the past couple of years about legalizing 30-30's and .223's. I have not heard any confirmation, yet. However, I think we are within a couple of years of this happening I love Hi-Powered rifles but I don't think adding these calibers is a good idea. One reason is our state is way too congested. Also, it's not that hard to kill a deer with a shotgun or the other legalized short range rifles, so why try to make it easier??

That's how I felt. We had a guy from another shop in the area this week, and that's what he had told me. Just thought I would run it past everyone here.

I'd be surprised if Indiana ever allows rifles in those calibers for deer hunting.

I wish I could agree with you Eli. However, ever since the state allowed rifles to be used for deer hunting they have added more and more legal calibers each year. Each caliber they add has a little more range than the previous calibers. I have a friend who has close connections with someone who attends the meetings when hunting regulations are discussed and hashed out. He says one of the hot topics for the last couple of years has been allowing long range rifles (specifically .223) to be used as a legal deer hunting weapon in the state of Indiana. He feels we are within a couple of years of this becoming a reality based on how the discussions have went. He says their seems to be a ton of support for it and very little opposition against it. He has been holding off buying an AR15 (.223) until he felt the law would get approved because he likes to only buy guns that he can use for more than just target shooting. He bought one earlier this spring That alone kind of tells me all I need to know. I guess we will wait and see but I hope our state officials choose safety over dollar signs. It has been said that one of the reasons our state is so interested in making this law is that it could provide a huge increase in non-resident license sales because a couple of our bordering states do not allow the use of .223's and owners of 223's are looking for opportunities to be able to use their weapon. However, I know in my area there are very few public places for non-resident hunters to hunt. Without places to hunt they won't sell licenses.
