Well santy clause brought me a new coyote call. ITs a Foxpro Spitfire.. I really like it. Came with 24 sounds on it ..sounds are very realistic. HAs 5 volume settings, 5 is pretty dang loud. Took it out christmas day along with my 222 and made a set looking over a hayfield. Started out playing some "Bay Bee cottontail" for a couple minutes then waited about 5 minutes and played it for another 2 minutes and immediately switched to "juevenile red fox in distress" and blasted it as loud as it would go. playued that for 30 seconds and stopped it for a minute or two and started playing "sreamin grey fox" 10 seconds into that i caught movement and sure enough there was the old dog he was running parallel to me going toward the woods.. I should have been more patient, but when i lay eyes on a coyote my first reaction is to drop everything and get on it and kill it. lol I had my gun on shootin sticks and i was not very experienced with this gun and i aimed at the top of his back and probably shot right over him... oh well hahaha Should have put it right on him!
I used that calling sequence because we are finding both grey and red fox killed by coyotes. I wanted it to sound like a fox caught a rabbit and then a coyote caught the fox. I think it worked!
Anybody else got a foxpro and know any good sounds?? Or just any tips about coyote huntin.. Im really just gettin into this pretty serious now that i actually have a good call that will actually call something in.
Me and a buddy also called in some crows with it and shot some.. thats a blast!! And we tried calling coons with the "fighting coons" sound but i think it was too cold after doing some research on it.. my buddies seem to be having a hard time finding any coons with their dogs too so they may be part of it too ??

Well the FoxPro is a great call, not saying another brand is better or worse. Ive used the little green Johnny Stewart predator calls with success. I've noticed that if you have a decoy, they come running in and you almost do not have time to shoot by the time you see them. If you don't have a decoy the will sit at a good distance and watch for awhile before moving in so be still and patient. This isn't the open west like you may see in videos, the dogs behave a little different here. You had one come in, so you seem to have something right. Keep it up and post some dead dogs

Thanks, ill try. I dont use a decoy.. I have two other spots that i have seen coyotes and one spot is loaded wiht em but there is a guy down there still trying to hunt deer so im gonna wait til deer seasons over. and the other spot is hard to get to because the river is up over the road . i have seen coyotes out in that spot in the hayfield almost every night i went down there to deer hunt. Looks like a good spot for fox too.
I got a Johnny stewart call.. called in a red fox once to 10 yards of me and let him go since i hadnt seen many foxes and i wasnt very serious about it anyways. i just wanted to kill some coyotes. Thats the only thing i ever called in with it. other than owls and hawks. Also bout had my head taken off while blowing on a mouth call while coyote huntin one time..

I have had hawks and owls come to the calls while hunting with Anthony before. It came into my call and was scoping out the rabbit decoy. What are you shooting?

That's a sweet Christmas present! I'd recommend the "FoxJack-2" for a Spitfire decoy. My buddy, "Yoteslayer" Mike, got a foxjack for his FoxPro and really likes it. He already had the "J-I-B" decoy, but the foxjack mounts directly to the call and is a lot easier to pack around than the jib. It also has an LED light so you can use the decoy at night. I wish Mike still got on here...he'd be able to give you some good tips. I know that he recommends a decoy because it draws the dogs attention to something other than that guy setting there with a rifle. He's also big on hunting the wind. He won't go if the winds over 10mph and always hunts with the wind in his face. He also doesn't over hunt a spot. He has several different spots and will only hunt each place 1 or 2 times a season. If I remember right, the couple video kills we've got were both big females called in with the coyote pup distress. I'd say you did good on your call selection since you brought one in. It pays to think like a dog. Good luck and I'm looking forward to some yote pics and videos! Here's a few of our adventures with "yoteslayer." I'll try to get back with him and do some more filming as soon as deer season is over. Chase's First Late Winter Yote Another late winter hunt....main thing I remember about this is that it was COLD.

I shoot a 222 with an old redfield (i think) 10 power scope.. not the greatest scope in the world since its so high magnification its hard to shoot close up stuff.....however.. This morning i managed to crawl out of bed at 7 30, almost went back to bed but i went huntin and went to the spot where i had seen coyotes in deerseason. Got setup and did the same rabbit/fox distress sequence and after 30 minutes nothing showed. The wind was good and it was blowin toward where i thought they were gonna come so I kinda thought it wasnt very smart to even try to call but maybe id get a shot off before they smelled me lol. Then i did some "coyote pup howls" and just let it do a couple howls and shut it off. sat there for 10 more minutes and packed up walked back thru the field to the truck, I walked 400 yards and looked up and saw what i thought was someones dog at first lol then i was like " HOLY CRAP ARE YOU KIDDING ME THATS A FREAKIN COYOTE!" lol immediately dropped to the ground took my gun off my shoulder and figured he already seen me , but nope, he kept comin then got behind a tree and stoopped i tried to get my monopod shooting stick out and did but couldnt get it adjust to the right length before he came out from behind the tree so i shot offhand. He finally saw me i got on him and smoked him. when i looked up he was laying on the ground feet straight up in the air. hahaha REDEMPTION!! It was a nice male coyote average sized had a nice coat on him. kind of blondish lookin. hopefully ill get some more down this week! ill put a pic up

Just got coyote #2 of 2013 tonight! Ready for 2014! I'm on a roll haha I killed this one on my gmas where i missed that last one.. Nothing showed up to the first set. moved to the other corner of the property about 1/4 mile and setup on the edge of a little field. had the 12 gauge pump loaded with buckshot layin next to me and 222 on the shootin sticks. Played some "Bay bee cottontail" 20 minutes later i gave up on the cottontail and i played "Female coyote Long howls" let out about 3 howls. waited about a minute and played "coyote pup howls" two howls. Shut it off and was looking to my left because i thought i heard something. when i look back ahead of me i saw Mr.Coyote stealthily walking/trotting through the field. He stopped on the other side of a cedar tree about 65 yards from me. I got on him and decided to go ahead and shoot thru a little brush. let er rip and she was down like a rock. Shot her in the neck. Nice lookin female coyote! Wish i had it on video! gonna see if i can get some more at another spot in the morning. Man this is fun stuff! I love the rush you get when you first lay eyes on the coyote! Attachments:

Looks like youve got it figured out pretty well! My biggest thing is to think of where the yote will want to come from and where the wind is from there!

This one came in from downwind of me.. not sure how it didn't smell me but i did spray down before i went huntin and i had blood on me so maybe that brought him in or atleast was a cover scent??I kinda wonder about that i would think it would attract them if they got a whiff of it.haha

I gave them to my friend who traps a lot. He did all the work haha he o gonna give me half the money for em when they sell. I just kill em and bring em to him since I'm not very experienced at skinning them and don't know how to flesh them and don't have the stretching board things and don't know where to send them to sell them so I just let him take care of that and I will still make a few bucks. Me and him and another buddy are entering a predator challenge Friday thru sunday. Gonna try to whack some dogs and maybe win a little money! Should be fun!
