November 4th i saw a decent 10 point while driving home just after dark. they were coming from my gmas land fairly close to a food plot i threw together at the last second (just some leftover wheat). So after the stupid time change i get out of school and by the time i get home it is about 4:00 which is really 5:00 so i throw my camo on and go to that stand. Walkin in i saw 3 does coming out of the woods next to the plot they saw me and ran back in . then right by my stand i spooked what I thought was a nice buck, but that was only based on its body size i really couldnt see how big. so i get up there and the way my stand is its on a double stemmed sycamore tree and to get the stand up i ahd to put the stand right up against the other tree so i could get my ladder stick on there. well the wind is blowin and the stand starts creeking up against the tree. I ended up putting a scent wick in between the stand and the tree which solved the problem.
So i get my camera stuff setup and hang a scent wich right in front of me on a branch and spray it with buck bomb "doe in estrus". 5 30 rolls around and i look down the way and see a tree shaking. I looked down the tree and see its a big buck making a rub. i grunt at him and he immediately grunts back and starts walking parallel to me at about 45 yards through the brush and keeps grunting as he walks while stopping to absolutely demolish a good sized beech tree. makes multiple rubs and walks on to a little lane we have bushogged thru the woods. he stops and makes a scrape. (there has been a scrape in this exact spot every year for atleast 6 or 7 years) Then he gets done making a scrape and he grunts puts his tail up in the air fluffs it out and starts walking up the lane to my foodplot.
I moved the camera to look over the foodplot and grabbed my bow. i can hear him crunching the leaves loudly as he walks closer and i started getting nervous. Not really shaking or anything but my hands were sweating a little and i kept telling myself this is my buck. dont screw this up. dont do anything stupid be patient.
So he comes out and stands facing my at 15 yards and i was hoping he would turn left and walk thru food plot at 10 yards broadside. My stand creeks, he looks around. Then i pushed the other tree away from my stand with my foot to keep it from rubbing against the stand. He gives an OK grunt and starts marching straight on instead of turning. He walks right in fron of me about 4 yards away . I had to move my bow and camera around and couldnt get the camera on him. Finally got it on him and the buck is standing in a little brush and my stand creeks again. He jolts a little and then he took another step. He is broadside at 4 yards almsot straight down with a little brush covering him. I decide it was now or never i pull back and i was so nervous i literally wanted to pull the trigger before i even looked down the peep sight. Then i pulled myself together and centered the pin and put it right where it needed to be and let it fly. I heard a loud crack. I looked up to see him running off with the whole arrow sticking out of what i though was his spine? when i watch the video on computer i saw the arrow hit the top of his shoulder blade. Just inches from killing him. I was so bummed i didnt even want to tell anybody what had happened. Put me in a bad mood the next couple days. But its just another learning experience and i figure he has a very good chance of surviving it. he was not limping at all and acted like he had no idea what had happened. We waited 2 hours after i shot him and 2 buddies came down with spotlights and I ended up finding decent blood at the end of the lane for just a little while and then it trickled off all the way thru the field to the next big woodlot 400-500 yards away. lost the blood there and looked the next day with no luck. Just one of those things you cant let it get you down. checked my tail cam and the next morning i had a nice 8 point in a food plot at 9:16 am .. Hoping to get some redemption this weekend! It's like someone flipped a switch the bucks are really chasing and moving
