The DNR has had the nets up at bass this week. Just talked to the biologist earlier today, they will be pulling them from bass for the last time this am and taking them over to west where they will remain the rest of the week. If you are not doing anything they check them in the mornings, we are going to try to get down there friday to check it out.

Have they caught anything in them?

With the nets they catch several fish every night. The biologist emailed me again last night and it looks like they set them a little sooner then ideal. With water temps at 39 all they are catching are males because it is still a little to cold for the big girls to come out and play.

Are female muskies typically bigger than the males?

Are female muskies typically bigger than the males? Yep, like largemouth bass, the really big ones are females. How to identify....female vent is an "8" or "pear." A male's is "keyhole" shaped. A true trophy musky would be 50" and a female. If I'm not mistaken, a trophy male would be around 45".

From what I have heard very few males every make it over 40 inches. I know the biggest fish they caught the first night was 39 and all the fish they caught the second night were males so I am assuming about the same on size. West is a funny lake, have heard some guys who like it as much or more then bass, we have fished it several times and have seen one fish.

Mr. Kittaka the biologist emailed me today, they ran the nets for two days and west and did not catch a single fish. They left them out over the weekend hoping the water may warm up a little and maybe they will do some good.

Thanks for the picture showing the difference between male and female. I never knew how to tell them apart.
Heading to Bass Lake this afternoon! I'll let you know how it goes!

From what I've seen of West, there seems to be large dead zones and then certain areas where the fish finder lights up like a Christmas tree. I would think the area where the springs bubble up would be the hot spot in the winter. I seen the fish just totally piled up there one time in the heat of the summer.

Nothing yesterday. Got there about 2:00 PM and off the water about 5:30. Wind was out of the NW and cold. Wind was making it a challenge to control the boat. We lost a couple of baits to the trees. There was one other boat out, don't know if they had any luck, or what they were fishing for.
One of these days, we'll catch one.
