The deer are digging up and eating the turnips. I'd always heard that they would do this in the winter, but this is the first time I've actually seen it here. All of the honey suckle patches around here have been ate down to the vines. They might be getting pretty hungry? There was also a huge set of prints that I'm guessing came from my old friend. Note the size of that turnip....big as a volley ball!

Do you guys hunt over your turnip plot? No, it's pretty much in our backyard and they usually only hit it at night.

I wonder if they'd hit it during the day if you planted some kind of screen around it.

Antler King makes a product called bedding in a bag that is essentially the same thing. I'm considering planting some of it this summer.

I'd just try to find the seed at your local co-op. Anytime you buy the bag that has a picture of a deer on it you are paying more than you should.
I tried to find bulk chicory the other day, but the co-op in Bloomington didn't have any. I went to Orscheln and found a pound of Tecomate chicory. I paid over $10 for something that should have only been $2-$3.

I went to my local co-op last fall and the seed was sold in bags with 5 lbs being the minimum. By the time you buy all the seed needed to match the blends in Antler King, Biologic, etc. you would've had to spend quite a bit more than the bag with the deer on it. However, I would've had enough seed to plant food plots for the next 10 hunting seasons. Don't forget, the bags with the deer head on it are designed to give your plot the longest life span possible. If you buy just one type of seed you are greatly limiting the possibility of your food plot.

Bingo. That's what has kept me from planting a screen. Egyptian wheat is the one that gets really tall. Here's a thread from QDMA where someone shows the progress of the EW.... www.qdma.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49476If it can hide a tractor, it should be able to hide a deer!

If yopu really want to put a screen up i would just take some haybales and lined them up along the edge of the food plot might cost more iof you have to buy your bales but the screen will last you a real long time.. you could stack them as high as you want

also the seed at the co op will be cheaoer but most of the plants in food plot seeds with the deer on the bag are specialized to produce more tender plants/ more forage/ sweeter tasting/more drought resistant/faster growing/ than the seeds at the co op. take oats for example plant some form the co op and then plant some oats from a bag from the store the oats from the co op are not as tender as the ones from the store. they planted oats as a cover crop in the cornfield where i hunt and it does not look like the forage oats in my "Buck n oats" food plot, but in the future ill probly buy most of my seed from the co op anyways unless i cant get it there

It would probably cost a few thousand bucks to build a big enough screen! Plus....I'd hate the thought of wasting hay when people with animals to feed are needing it so bad.

WOW! That E.W. gets HUGE! It was over the top of his Tractor! I'd say, if you were REALLY set on putting in a screen, THATS the way to go. Who knows, maybe you have a member on here who has access to some seed, and you can barter your way into some. If you DID plant it, you would HAVE to set up a LIVE feed Trail cam though, you know, just to keep an eye on when their moving...
Have you checked hay prices lately? It would probably cost a few thousand bucks to build a big enough screen! Plus....I'd hate the thought of wasting hay when people with animals to feed are needing it so bad.
Well now is not the ideal time to buy them after a major drought lol and im just sayin i know some people that bail the hay in their field and line them up on the edge of the field and they never do anything with them.. or atleast they seem to sit there for years. it would be convenient if you bailed your own hay and had plenty of hay bales.. theres a big treetop that fell in our yard that im gonna pull down one of my food plots to use as screen. The plot is naturally hidden from the rest of the field and the trail where i drive the truck/tractor up. but there a little bit of an open area on the side and im gonna use the tree top to close it off a little better where they can feel safe in the plot. So i mean you could always just build you a big brush pile depending on how big the plot is and if it would be "do-able" i mean maybe you only have to put a little screen blocking the view from the road/ your house to make the deer feel safe enough to come out in it
