Anybody gonna plant any spring food plots?? Im going to try and draw some deer onto my gmas property by planting about 1 acre of corn that i will leave standing all season, about 2 acres of soybeans, about 1-1.5 acres of winter wheat (fall food plot), about a 1/8 acre food plot of oats and chicory, and about 1.5 acres of sunflowers for the deer as well as the doves. Im going to try and do some dove hunting this year..
I dont have alot of equipment for these food plots. I got the corn seed for free and already have the oats+chicory. Im probly not gonna put down any fertilizer or herbicide because i dont want to pput too much money into this. Ive got an old tractor with a plow, a disc, and a bushhog. I am going to broadcast the sunflowers, soybeans, wheat, and oats but i will have to plant each corn seed by hand but it should pay off if it does good. Every 2 weeks or so i am going to take the weedeater and weed eat the grass between the rows or atleast until the corn gets tall enough. I alwasy have trouble with the weeds overtaking the plot but i have never tried corn. My best spot is gonna have about 3/4 acre corn about 50 yards from my stand with soybeans +winter wheat within 30 yards of the tree. I figure they will eat the soybeans+ wheat heavy in the early season and in the late season i will switch my stand to the edge of the woods and hunt over the corn Then my other spot is gonna be about the same size field of corn in front of me and a small plot of winter wheat behind me. THere is a long narrow field between the two big chunck of woods and the deer have a trail where they cross the field right there and there are big rubs on the trees the big bucks travekl thru there during the rut. with the standing corn there it will make the deer feel safer to cross the field and will hopefully brose on the corn and maybe come eat the acorns off the tree im in and get some wheatfor dessert it is about 60 yards to the far side of the corn field and the wheat will be about 25 yards. plus there is a bedding area about 80 yards from where my treesand is and i have seen big bucks hanging around that bedding area in the years past during the rut and late season. im excited to see how this does ill keep you guys posted on how the plots are doing when i plant them. I am actually gonna go on vacation to europe with my family on april 26th i think so i will be very busy trying to get a turkey and plant my food plots before then.. My sister goes to school in europe we are staying for a week so i figure i will still have enough time to finsish planting the corn if i dont get it done. but i will also want to turkey hunt if i havent killed one in the first few days of the season.
