Well went huntin again this evening. Left the house around 3 pm and got in the woods about 4.. I decided i was gonna go farther back on the property where there is some thick woods where i havent even hunted in this season. I figured the deer were staying in the woods and browsing on green briar and twigs off of saplings. Well i walked across the cornfield and was getting ready to climb over the fence to get onto the trail that goes into the woods andwhen i looked up at the fence something caught my eye and i looked up and low and behold there is a freakin deer broadside at 20 yards directly in front of me and it has no clue i am even there . IT was like it was set up for me to kill it..it was my second chance. Well the FIRST thing i did was take the darn safety off then i cocked the hammer back raised the gun and looked at its head for any bumps but couldnt see any so i took my shot and it slowly ran off about 25 yards and stood there for a few seconds and bedded down+died shortly after. When i walked up to it the first thing i noticed was that it had broken one of its front legs which was swollen up and filled with pus (yuck) Next thing i noticed were the scars on top of its head from when it had shed its antlers! but from the looks of it they were shed atleast a month ago so i figure it has something to do with his leg injury...
When i was field dressing it i noticed scars on it back ankles and on its rear end from coyotes attacking it.. At first i was disappointed tyhat i shot a buck but know that i think about it i would rather kill a wounded deer than let it starve or be ripped apart by a pack of coyotes. And there are LOTS of coyotes in that area. I doubt that that deer would have made it through the winter. I dont know if the deer was hit by a car or what..
My dad came and we strapped the deer to a sled and dragged it thru the field to the road it took us about 2 hours but it was alot easier with the sled. We found a dirt road that leads from the road to the cornfield that the combines use for access to the field.. so that saved us alot of walking too.
I didnt get the shot on video because i didnt have the camera on my gun and didnt think i could get it out of my pack without spooking the deer.. Ill try to put up a pic of it
