We went down for the Glendale FWA put-n-take hunt again this weekend. My cousin, Opie, puts in for it every year, but this year he wasn't able to get the section he usually tries to get. The section we hunted was a lot rougher with a slough, a pond, drained pond, big woods, and a STEEP hill mixed in with the usual fields and fence rows.
Day 1- We had 8 guys and 2 German Short Hair Pointers. The going was tough and most of the birds came from the thick wooded area. We also had a few other hunters in our section from North Carolina that had a minivan full of field trial Brittany Spaniels. They had hunted this section the week before and knew right where to go. They limited fairly quick, and then went back out in the field to work a young dog. We ended up taking 11 of our 16 birds this day before giving it up around 4.
Day 2- My Uncle Jerry's GSP is an old dog and he was too pooped to go another day, but we had a couple different guys go that had another GSP and a yellow lab. That gave us 8 guys with 3 dogs. We were the only ones in this section on Sunday and that made things a little better. Birds were flying everywhere early and a few guys were able to get their 2 birds pretty early. If we could have hit the birds we shot at we probably could have been home to watch the early NFL games, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. (And I was the WORST! ) We ended up taking 13 of our 16 birds today and quit around 3.
Chase and me with our birds from today...
Chase had his GoPro camera mounted to his shotgun and was able to get some pretty good footage of 1 of his birds...
I've got enough video footage to put together a video, but nothing like last year's. The birds were a lot wilder this year. A bunch of them ran about 20 yards before taking flight and it seemed the cameraman was never where he needed to be.
It was still a great time!
